The Heavy Equipment/Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on heavy construction equipment, diesel-powered vehicles,
trailers, and related machinery. This position ensures company equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with OSHA, DOT, and manufacturer standards while minimizing downtime for field operations.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic issues on heavy construction equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance according to manufacturer recommendations and company maintenance schedules.
- Repair and service diesel engines, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering, suspension, and cooling systems.
- Troubleshoot hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, valves, and hoses.
- Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including wiring, lighting, charging, and starting systems.
- Service air brake systems and DOT-regulated equipment.
- Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed.
- Conduct inspections and identify equipment requiring repair or replacement.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair orders, and parts usage.
- Operate diagnostic software and computerized troubleshooting equipment when applicable.
- Coordinate with supervisors regarding equipment availability and repair priorities.
- Test equipment after repairs to verify safe and proper operation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Respond to field service calls and emergency equipment breakdowns when necessary.
- Assist with inventory control of parts, fluids, and shop supplies.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental guidelines for handling oils, fuels, batteries, and hazardous materials.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Completion of a diesel mechanic program or equivalent work experience preferred.
- Minimum 3–5 years of heavy equipment and diesel repair experience preferred.
- Experience with Caterpillar, John Deere, Komatsu, Volvo, Case, Bobcat, or similar equipment preferred.
- Ability to read service manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical diagrams.
- Basic computer skills for maintenance tracking systems.
- CDL preferred or ability to obtain one.
- ASE, CAT, Cummins, or other manufacturer certifications are a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds with assistance.
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, squat, climb, and work in confined spaces for extended periods.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying Arizona weather conditions, including extreme heat.
- Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, lifting devices, and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Construction equipment shop and outdoor job sites.
- Exposure to dust, dirt, grease, noise, vibration, and varying weather conditions.
