Job Goal:
Candidate is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting activities contributing to the educational, social, and physical development of students to enhance their self-worth and equip them with the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to function in society. Considerable judgment, tact, patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to deal with students from varied socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles. This position requires creativity and adaptive thinking to match teaching objectives, learning strategies, and instructional plans with students’ abilities.
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's Degree (required). Valid Texas Teaching Certificate or enrolled in a TEA-approved alternative certification program.
- Apply knowledge of current education and instructional theories, methodologies, techniques, and principles, subject matter, and State, Local, and Federal laws and regulations affecting students.
- Understand child and adolescent development and manage student behavior.
- Communicate effectively using a variety of media, work with others as a team, organize and maintain records, manage time and resources effectively, evaluate performance, and provide constructive feedback.
- Provide instruction to a class, individual students, or groups using oral presentation, demonstration, discussion of homework, answering questions, laboratory directions, and games.
- Plan lessons, including preparing objectives and goals, designing tests or exams, studying material, setting up labs, and preparing exams.
- Facilitate learning in the classroom by maintaining discipline, encouraging participation, and consulting with parents, staff, and other providers to identify and address social or developmental needs.
- Evaluate student performance and maintain records and document progress.
- Perform all duties pertaining to the area of expertise, including language, music, physical education, vocational training, safety, and career education.
- Maintain contact with parents through conferences, progress reports, letters, and special meetings.
- Maintain professional development through classes, conferences, seminars, workshops, and journals. Provide technical guidance to less experienced teachers.
- Perform various administrative activities such as attending faculty meetings, ordering equipment and supplies, copying materials, creating bulletin boards, taking attendance, obtaining permission slips, and coordinating department activities.
- Prepare lesson materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Monitor student behavior inside and outside the classroom.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Perform other duties assigned by supervisor.
- Demonstrate professional, ethical, and responsible behavior.
- Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community and solicit support.
Services are generally provided within a standard classroom environment. Some movement throughout the classroom is necessary (standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling). Light lifting of materials (up to 20–40 lbs.) is required. Field trips may be made. The position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids. Regular attendance is required.
Personal Work RelationshipsCandidate receives administrative supervision and is typically evaluated formally one time per year. Less experienced candidates may receive additional guidance, and more experienced candidates may serve as mentors. Candidates may be involved in planning and coordinating departmental activities and may receive detailed instruction on policy, procedure, or law changes. Candidates have significant contact with students, parents, and school staff to provide instruction, guidance, exchange information, and develop student social skills.
Candidates may also maintain contacts within the community to enrich content and utilize additional instructional methodologies.
