SUMMARY: The Dual Flex College Mentor is a certified high school teacher who serves as the on-campus student success partner for high school students enrolled in Temple College Dual Flex courses. Working collaboratively with the Temple College Instructor of Record (IOR), Dual Credit Enrollment Advisors, counselors, and campus personnel, the Dual Flex College Mentor provides in-person support that promotes student engagement, academic success, college readiness, and persistence.

The Dual Flex College Mentor reinforces college-level expectations while helping students develop executive functioning skills, self-advocacy, time management, organization, and independent learning habits. This role supports students in navigating the college learning environment while maintaining the rigor, integrity, and expectations of Temple College coursework.

Qualifications (Required and Preferred)
  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Valid teaching certification in the applicable content area or closely related field.
  • Experience working with secondary or postsecondary students in an instructional setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with educational technology platforms and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Employed by a high school participating in the Temple College Dual Flex program.

CERTIFICATION OR LICENSES:

  • Valid Texas teaching certification in the Dual Flex subject area served.
  • Completion of D2L navigation and student support training through the Temple College Dual Flex Summer Academy.
  • Participation in a one-half day planning and orientation meeting with the assigned IOR.
  • Signed acknowledgment of the Dual Flex Handbook.
  • Dual Flex Course Mentor Performance Expectations and Role Parameters.
Job Duties and Responsibilities

The incumbent will: Student Support and Engagement:

  • Be present and actively engaged during all scheduled Dual Flex class periods.
  • Facilitate structured class time using the weekly instructional guide provided by the IOR.
  • Assist students in understanding course expectations, navigating D2L, and managing assignment deadlines.
  • Reinforce academic behaviors including time management, study skills, note-taking, self-advocacy, and independent learning.
  • Encourage student accountability and responsibility for college-level coursework.
  • Identify students experiencing academic or engagement challenges and communicate concerns promptly to the IOR.
  • Maintain a productive, college-appropriate classroom environment during Dual Flex sessions.
  • Facilitate classroom discussions as directed by the IOR.
  • Show multimedia instructional materials assigned by the IOR.
  • Provide supplemental high school-level scaffolding materials for state assessment support or instructional reinforcement purposes. Such materials shall supplement, never replace, college-level curriculum and shall not factor into the student's college grade.
  • Refer students to Temple College academic support resources, including tutoring, library services, advising, and student support services as appropriate.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate regularly with the IOR, Dual Credit Enrollment Advisors, counselors, and other appropriate stakeholders.
  • Participate in required weekly planning meetings with the IOR.
  • Provide weekly student performance updates that include attendance, participation, engagement, and academic concerns while adhering to FERPA requirements.
