Crime Scene Investigator

Crime Scene Investigator, under the general supervision of the CID Sergeant, responds to crime scenes and other serious incident locations to support the protection of life, property, and preservation of evidence. Flexibility to work, days, evenings, weekends, and holiday hours as needed and during emergency situations. Must be available by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gathers, transports, analyzes, interprets, and stores evidence from crime scenes, death investigations and traffic fatalities according to Department Property and Evidence policies
  • Collects, processes, and evaluates latent fingerprints, conducts visual and physical analysis and comparison of crime scene latent prints to local, state, and national fingerprint databases and in accordance with Department Policies and Procedures
  • Provides technical support and training regarding the management, handling and storing of property and evidence for all divisions within the Police Department
  • Reads and interprets criminal codes, case law, department policies and procedures and other materials to increase knowledge and ensure proper legal action
  • Prepares necessary documentation and evidence for court, attends pre-trail hearings, and testifies in Municipal, County, District and Federal courts
  • Attends courses, seminars, and in-services to enhance knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Inventories, orders, and maintains evidence processing and collection supplies and equipment
  • Responds to general questions from the public and establishes a professional rapport with the community
  • Develops and maintains relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, court systems, schools, citizens, and civic groups
  • Operates and maintains city-owned vehicles in accordance with Texas Traffic Laws, City and Department Policies and Procedures
  • Follows departmental policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Follows City policies, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, chemistry, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience in as a crime scene investigator or related role
  • Pass extensive criminal background check, polygraph, and evaluation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of experience in as a crime scene investigator
  • International Association for Identification Certification (I.A.I)

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

  • Valid driver's license
  • AFIS certification (Automated Fingerprint Identification System)
  • NIBN certification (National Integrated Ballistic Information Network)
