Cardiac Sonographer
The Cardiac Sonographer 1 performs basic to intermediate cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients. Common procedures include transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiograms used to diagnose and assess cardiac abnormalities. General duties include preparing equipment and patients and explaining procedures. The sonographer reviews images, reports findings, and analyzes patient clinical history to identify the purpose of the examination. The role involves framing the clinical question that the examination is intended to answer and expanding the examination as necessary.
The sonographer performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures using a variety of equipment and techniques. They make necessary measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results. The sonographer identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities, extending the scope of the examination when necessary. They correlate invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function. Assisting physicians in procedure and operating rooms is part of the role, performing echo cardiographic studies to aid in complex procedures.
The sonographer may assist in performing transesophageal studies with the cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizing the probe. Preparing patients for procedures involves obtaining clinical history, including cardiac-related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data. Daily maintenance of the echocardiography lab and its equipment is expected, reporting malfunctions as appropriate. The sonographer acts as a resource to other staff, physicians, and students regarding equipment, techniques, and procedures to optimize patient care.
Working closely with a quality coordinator ensures adherence to quality processes and protocols. The sonographer implements protocols as new technology evolves and ensures system standards are followed.
