Summary

The Public Relations Specialist position is a responsible, professional, and creative position that has direct contact with the public. The Public Relations Specialist will work alongside the Public Relations Coordinator and Communications & Public Relations Division Director in creating and maintaining a highly favorably image for the City of Temple by communicating programs, accomplishments, and points of view to the public and media.

Duties involve responding to media inquiries and publishing media releases. Work is performed under the direction of the Communications & Public Relations Division Director.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assists the Communications & Public Relations Division Director in all communications efforts to enhance the City’s image and deliver key City messages.
  • Works collaboratively with all departments, while supporting them in their media relations and communication efforts.
  • Serves as the secondary backup public information officer, if needed.
  • Assists with a variety of projects, events, administrative, and clerical support.
  • Media Relations
    • Responsible for assisting in preparing, drafting, and disseminating media releases for the City.
    • Maintains regular media contacts and keeps them proactively informed of issues and events of importance to public safety and citizens.
    • Responds to inquiries and requests from internal and external customers within 24 hours and effectively presents information.
    • Identify, research and then communicate proactively with the media to help tell unique stories about the City.
    • Responsible for the tracking media coverage and assisting with performance metrics reporting (KPIs), as it relates to media relations.
    • Be available as part of a 24/7 PR Team, as needed.
  • Publications
    • Assists the Communications & Public Relations Division Director in researching, preparing, writing, editing and disseminating external communications materials, to include annual reports, brochures, fact sheets, press kits, and other forms of written communication.
    • Responsible for developing and writing content for monthly City newsletter and other publications, as needed.
  • Web, Social Media, and Multimedia
    • Assists with developing and writing content for  and other engagement portals, as needed.
    • Maintains and updates newsrooms sections of the website on a consistent basis with fresh stories and information, including visuals.
    • Assists with photography and/or video needs for various communications channels like social media, website, and/or for the news media.
  • Marketing
    • Designs social media graphics and other promotional materials, as needed, to support the City’s overall branding efforts.
    • Provides communications counsel and support in the promotion for special events, campaigns, services, and programs.
    • Researches communications & marketing award opportunities.
  • Professional Development
    • Participates in professional organizations and marketing information groups to advance knowledge and network with other industry professionals.
    • Stay up-to-date with current industry trends and technology by attending trainings, conferences, webinars, etc.
  • Follows City policy, procedures, and safety guidelines
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • Combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Advertising, Mass Communication, or related field
  • One (1) year related experience; experience in content creation, marketing, digital photography, videography, website design, social media platforms
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graphic design experience
  • Demonstrated use of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Municipal Government experience
  • Photography & Videography experience
