Role

Job Summary

The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who uses the BSWH nursing model to coordinate patient care. The RN assesses patients, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements individualized care plans, and evaluates patients’ responses. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by applying knowledge of patient needs, facilitates transitions through healthcare, and delegates interventions based on the Texas Nursing Practice Act, patient condition, and employee competencies.

Functions of the Role
  • Conduct accurate assessments with clinical reasoning, prioritize patient and family needs, develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing care plan, and modify the plan to meet outcomes.
  • Evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, including nursing indicators, and support evidence‑based practice changes through research and learning.
  • Create an attentive, safe, and therapeutic environment for patients, families, and staff; maintain appropriate boundaries and relieve pain.
  • Recognize and incorporate culture, beliefs, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, status, age, and values into care plans.
  • Protect patient confidentiality, autonomy, dignity, and rights; represent concerns; resolve ethical and clinical issues.
  • Facilitate learning for patients, families, nursing staff, healthcare team, and community; integrate education throughout care.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and community to create and implement a care plan; delegate tasks and ensure timely follow‑up.
  • Use problem‑solving strategies and resources for patient, family, and staff needs; consider safety, effectiveness, and efficiency in planning.
Key Success Factors
  • Knowledge of nursing and patient care standards and procedures.
  • Know laws, rules, regulations, and standards of certifying and accrediting bodies; follow hospital and departmental protocols and policies.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, medications, dosages, effects, and adverse reactions.
  • Knowledge of nursing ethics and patient privacy rights.
  • Clear oral and written communication skills.
  • Social skills to interact with a wide range of constituencies.
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Observation of changes in patients’ medical conditions; communicate to nursing staff and physicians/providers.
  • Provide age‑specific, quality, patient‑centered care; develop and modify care plans as needed.
  • General computer skills including Microsoft Office, electronic medical documentation, scheduling and payroll systems, and email.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited RN program.
  • Major:
    Nursing.
  • Minimum 2 years of OR nurse experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of cardiac OR specialty experience required.
Certification / License / Registration
  • Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer.
