Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional responsible for coordinating patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses, develops and implements an individualized plan of care, and evaluates the patient's response. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by facilitating their transitions through the healthcare encounter without preventable complications or delays.

The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Nursing Practice Act and each patient's condition. The role requires clinical judgment and assessment according to practice standards. The RN identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs, developing and modifying plans of care as needed. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, supporting evidence-based changes through research utilization and experiential learning.

The RN creates a compassionate and supportive environment for patients and families and develops therapeutic relationships. Recognizing and incorporating unique patient and family differences into care plans is essential. The RN preserves the confidentiality and rights of patients, creating plans that reflect patient values and goals. Facilitating learning for patients, families, and staff is a key function, along with collaborating with team members for integrated care.

The RN utilizes strategies for problem-solving and recognizes resource limitations while promoting safety and effectiveness in care delivery. Professionalism is demonstrated through participation in shared governance and commitment to personal growth. The RN contributes to the professional development of peers and engages in community service. Knowledge of nursing standards, medical terminology, ethical guidelines, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to observe and communicate changes in patient conditions, are required. The RN provides quality, patient-centered care with sensitivity and respect for diversity. General computer skills are also necessary for effective job performance.
