The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional. The RN coordinates patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient. The RN identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems. The RN develops and implements an individualized plan of care. The RN evaluates the patient's response to the care provided. The RN promotes safe passage for patients throughout their healthcare experiences.
The RN uses knowledge of patient needs to assist patients through healthcare encounters without preventable complications. The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on nursing standards. The role includes RNs in hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24/7 staffing including on-call.
Essential Functions of the Role:
The RN conducts accurate clinical assessments per practice standards. The RN identifies and prioritizes patient and family needs. The RN evaluates the nursing plan of care and modifies it to achieve clinical outcomes. The RN participates in quality/performance improvement initiatives. The RN creates a supportive and therapeutic environment for patients and families. The RN develops therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
The RN manages emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing. The RN recognizes and incorporates unique differences of patients and families into care plans. The RN advocates for patients' confidentiality, autonomy, and rights. The RN creates individualized plans reflecting patient and family values. The RN facilitates learning for patients, families, and healthcare team members. The RN collaborates with colleagues to develop and implement integrated care plans.
The RN uses resources effectively for problem-solving. The RN participates in shared governance and professional development.
Key Success Factors:
The RN has knowledge of nursing and patient care standards. The RN understands regulations and guidelines for nursing care. The RN is familiar with medical terminology and health promotion principles. The RN knows patient privacy rights and nursing ethics. The RN communicates thoughts clearly, both verbally and in writing. Interpersonal skills are necessary for a wide range of interactions. The RN possesses critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The RN is able to observe changes in patients and communicate effectively. The RN provides age-specific, quality, patient-centered care. General computer skills are required, including knowledge of electronic documentation systems.
