The Registered Nurse (RN) is a licensed professional who coordinates patient care delivery by the healthcare team. Using the nursing process, the RN assesses the patient, identifies nursing diagnoses based on responses to health problems, and develops an individual care plan. The RN promotes safe passage for patients by using knowledge of patient needs and the healthcare environment to assist patients in transitioning through encounters without preventable complications or delays.

The RN delegates interventions to healthcare personnel based on the Nursing Practice Act, each patient's condition, and the competencies of the employee. RNs in this role may work in hospital inpatient and outpatient departments with 24/7 staffing, including departments with on-call staffing on off shifts. Essential functions include conducting clinical assessments, identifying and prioritizing patient and family needs, and evaluating the nursing plan of care.

The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, supports evidence-based practice changes, and participates in quality improvement initiatives. Creating a compassionate, supportive, and safe environment for patients and families is fundamental. The RN develops therapeutic relationships while managing emotional and physical pain to promote comfort and healing. Recognizing and incorporating the unique differences of patients and families into care plans is essential.

The RN advocates for patients by preserving confidentiality, autonomy, and dignity while creating individualized care plans reflecting values and goals. Facilitating learning for patients, families, nursing staff, and the healthcare team is part of the role, integrating appropriate education throughout the continuum of care. Collaboration with colleagues and the community is necessary to develop and implement integrated care plans. The RN uses problem-solving strategies and recognizes resource limitations while maintaining safety and effectiveness in patient care.

Commitment to professional growth, community service, and improving nursing practice is required. Knowledge and understanding of nursing standards, ethics, and regulations are essential. Strong communication skills, critical thinking abilities, and interpersonal skills are necessary for interacting with various constituencies. The RN must provide age-specific, quality, patient-centered care through the nursing process, sensitive to the diversity of individual experiences.
