Equipment Operator – Paving, Quarry & Milling Position Summary
The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating various types of heavy equipment used in paving, asphalt production, quarry, milling, grading, and general construction operations. This position may operate different equipment depending on project needs and must be willing to perform a variety of duties as directed by the Foreman or Supervisor.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Safely operate heavy equipment such as pavers, milling machines, rollers, skid steers, loaders, excavators, dozers, motor graders, and other construction equipment.
- Perform equipment inspections before, during, and after operation and report mechanical issues or safety concerns promptly.
- Operate equipment in a safe, productive, and efficient manner while maintaining awareness of employees, vehicles, structures, and surrounding conditions.
- Assist with asphalt paving, milling, grading, quarry, material handling, and site preparation activities as assigned.
- Maintain proper material placement, grade, depth, alignment, and finish according to project requirements.
- Load, move, spread, stockpile, or process materials as required.
- Work as part of a crew to complete projects safely, efficiently, and according to schedule.
- Follow instructions from Foremen, Superintendents, and other company personnel.
- Perform routine cleaning, greasing, fueling, and basic maintenance of assigned equipment.
- Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and participate in required safety meetings and training.
- Assist with general labor and other construction duties when equipment operation is not required.
- Communicate effectively with ground personnel and other equipment operators.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Previous experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
- Experience in paving, milling, quarry, asphalt, grading, or general construction is a plus.
- Ability to safely operate equipment in varying work environments and conditions.
- Basic understanding of equipment operation, jobsite safety, and routine equipment maintenance.
- Ability to follow directions and work effectively as part of a team.
- Dependable attendance and a strong work ethic.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and overtime as project schedules require.
- Valid driver's license preferred and may be required depending on position and equipment operated.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and work around heavy equipment for extended periods.
- Ability to enter and exit heavy equipment safely.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and tools as needed.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments, including heat, cold, dust, noise, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to maintain attention to surroundings and equipment operation for extended periods.
Safety is a primary responsibility of this position. The Equipment Operator is expected to operate all equipment in accordance with company policies, manufacturer recommendations, jobsite requirements, and applicable safety regulations. Employees are expected to immediately report unsafe conditions, equipment defects, accidents, injuries, or other safety concerns to their supervisor.
Work EnvironmentThis position is primarily performed outdoors on construction sites, paving projects, quarries, asphalt plants, and other company or customer locations. Work may involve exposure to traffic, heavy machinery, dust, asphalt, noise, vibration, extreme temperatures, and changing jobsite conditions.
