The Department of Medical Education at the Quillen College of Medicine, East Tennessee State University, invites applications for an open-rank faculty position (Assistant, Associate, or Professor) to serve in pre-clinical teaching endeavors with an option for clinical services and dual appointment within the Department of Pathology. We seek candidates with broad training in pathology with the interest in teaching both pathology and histology content.

The candidate will be responsible for the management of these discipline threads across Quillen’s systems-based curriculum. Preference will be given to those candidates with expertise in interactive pedagogies, knowledge of medical school accreditation standards, and educational scholarship. With the opportunity to contribute to clinical practice, there is the possibility for fostering an integrative approach to medical education. The successful candidate will provide leadership and guidance to the pre-clinical curriculum in the areas of pathology and histology.

The successful candidate will provide leadership in the Doctoring Skills curriculum for first-and-second year medical students, focusing on the development of advanced interviewing, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and professional identity formation.

Quillen College of Medicine consistently ranks among the top Schools nationwide for rural medicine and primary care education.   • Developing course objectives linked to USMLE content and QCOM institutional educational objectives where histology and pathology are relevant.
  • Planning, developing, and providing active-learning student materials.
  • Planning, developing, and providing active-learning pedagogical modalities within the pre-clinical curriculum.
  • Writing and modifying quality NBME-style questions with faculty and staff support to be used in both the classroom and assessment settings, ensuring fair and accurate evaluation of student learning.
  • Collaborating with faculty across basic and clinical sciences to ensure content integration.
  • Acting as a team member to ensure courses run smoothly.
  • Work as a valued team member in implementing course continuous quality improvement.
  • Mentoring and supporting medical students in their professional and clinical development.
  • Participating in departmental and institutional service, faculty development, and curriculum committees.
  • Contributing to academic scholarship through either educational or basic/clinical sciences-based research.
Clinical Responsibilities (optional)
  • Engage in part-time clinical duties within the Department of Pathology, including diagnostic work and case review.
  • Provide expertise in histopathology and contribute to departmental initiatives.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Terminal degree (MD, DO, PhD, or MD/PhD)
  • Documented accomplishments as a clinician and educator with a least 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • If clinical duties are requested, board certification in general pathology (Anatomic and/or Clinical) or specific subspecialties including forensics.
  • For clinical duties, Tennessee State Licensure
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous histology and pathology teaching experience at a medical or professional school level.
  • Experience in innovative educational practices.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate medical school curricular/accreditation standards.
  • Experience with educational and/or basic and clinical science scholarship
