Job Description
Qualifications
- Not less than a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (copy of diploma or transcript must be submitted upon employment), and proof of additional training from one of the following: an associate’s degree, a minimum of 48 semester hours of higher level education, or passing a state‑mandated equivalency test.
- Meets health and physical requirements.
Job Goal
To assist teachers in providing specialized academic and physical training to students with disabilities.
Essential Functions
- Attend to the student’s personal needs (including, but not limited to, the changing of diapers).
- Help students walk, board buses, put on prosthetic appliances, eat, dress, and perform other physical activities as their needs arise.
- Provide clerical assistance to teachers and others.
- Assist with student management.
- Set up and operate learning/development equipment and materials.
- Tutor students.
- Assume responsibility for knowing and following the safety rules and proper procedures associated with the responsibilities of the job.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
- May require lifting objects that exceed fifty (50) pounds or the average weight of a student.
- Include pushing and/or pulling, climbing, stooping, kneeling and/or crawling, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing.

- Adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
- Adaptability to accepting responsibility for the direction, control, or planning of an activity.
- Adaptability to dealing with students.
- Adaptability to making generalizations, evaluations, or decisions based on sensory or judgmental criteria.
Capacity and Ability Requirements
- Intelligence:
Ability to understand instructions and underlying principles; ability to reason and make judgments. - Verbal:
Ability to understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them. - Form Perception:
Ability to make visual comparisons and discrimination and see slight differences in shapes and shadings of figures, widths, and lengths of lines. - Manual Dexterity:
Ability to move hands easily and manipulate small objects with the fingers. - Color Discrimination:
Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
Work Conditions
Normal working environment – usually 180 school days from 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Identified special need(s) of student(s) may require the normal work hours to change.
Non‑exempt from the requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act regarding pay for overtime work.
Job Requirements
- High school/Trade School degree preferred.
- Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
