Job DescriptionPurpose:
The Special Education Instructional Assistant works with individual and/or small groups of students under the supervision of a professionally licensed teacher. The assistant supports students receiving support through an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in general education, special education, or intervention settings. Assignments include classroom support, intervention delivery, data collection, lunchroom, playground, and related arts support.
SLE Program Purposes:
Specialized Learning Environments (SLEs) serve students with multiple disabilities and significant academic, medical, social‑emotional, behavior, or communication needs. Instruction is individualized based on the IEP and guided by federal and state curriculum standards. Programs are located in elementary, middle, and high schools within Washington County School, including Comprehensive Development Classrooms, Modified Academic Programs, and Behavior Intervention Programs.
- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher.
- Adapt instructional materials to address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administer classroom assignments, tests, homework, make‑up work, and other tasks.
- Provide immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a healthcare professional.
- Assist in completing all record‑keeping requirements.
- Assist in designing and utilizing appropriate materials for individual students.
- Instruct children in health and personal habits such as eating, resting, and toilet hygiene.
- Maintain a safe work and play environment.
- Assist teachers in modifying instructional materials and equipment for special education students.
- Support students individually or in small groups to practice and reinforce learning concepts.
- Help students work toward meeting IEP objectives and goals under teacher supervision.
- Maintain a positive, orderly, academically focused learning condition.
- Know and follow safety rules and procedures associated with the job responsibilities.
- Maintain regular and timely attendance.
- Collaborate with instructional staff, school personnel, parents, and community resources for students’ benefit.
- Communicate with teachers to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives where applicable.
- Coordinate instructional efforts with classroom teachers.
- Dress children and change diapers as necessary.
- Employ and implement de‑escalation and restraint strategies. Restraint training and certification are required.
- Apply special education strategies to improve sensory, perceptual‑motor, language, cognition, or memory skills as directed by the supervising teacher.
- Follow all board policies, school system rules, and administrative regulations.
- Encourage cooperative social behavior through activities and group projects.
- Implement IEPs focused on skill deficit improvements.
- Provide direct assistance for self‑care programs such as toileting, positioning, lifting, and feeding as needed.
- Implement instructional programs and lesson plans under teacher supervision.
- Instruct and monitor students on the use and care of equipment and materials.
- Demonstrate personal integrity and a strong work ethic.
