Assistant Principal General Description

The assistant principal is responsible for assisting the principal with leadership, supervision, direction, operations, and accountability at the assigned school. Specific duties include resolving student discipline problems; overseeing school athletics (if assigned); tracking attendance; coordinating building management including custodial services and inventory; evaluation of personnel; and accountability matters.

Duties and Responsibilities

The assistant principal is responsible for ensuring the following duties are effectively carried out:

  • Resolution of Student Discipline:
    Issues – Resolve student discipline issues by conducting investigations, meeting with students, teachers, and parents, reviewing information, preparing all documents and records, and assigning consequences according to the discipline model of the school.
  • Student Attendance:
    Monitor student attendance by reviewing records and files and working with the counselor and the system attendance officer.
  • Supervision of Facilities:
    Manage the building by working with the staff, the custodial staff, and system maintenance. Responsible for scheduling use of the facility by outside groups.
  • Safety and Security of Campus:
    Responsible for the safe operation of the physical plant and the general welfare of all persons on or about the school site. Ensuring the Safety Plan is current and is practiced regularly. Reporting any safety hazards to the appropriate party.
  • Analysis of Data:
    Monitoring student progress through the regular analysis of data and sharing results with staff. Data includes SWIS, TVAAS, and other.
  • Evaluation of Personnel:
    Assist in the evaluation of faculty and staff by implementing the approved evaluation tool.
  • Curriculum and Program Development and Evaluation:
    Assists the principal in the development of appropriate curricular and instructional programs and evaluation of programs.
  • Special Education Staffing:
    Assists in attending any special education staffing meeting as needed.
  • Scheduling:
    Assists in assuming responsibility for scheduling and ensuring that students receive appropriate placement.
  • Other Duties:
    Any other duty as assigned by the building principal.
  • Additional Skills and Knowledge
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills and ability to work with parents and teachers.
  • Knowledge of school law.
  • Strong understanding of instruction and learning.
  • Ability to work with students, parents, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Operating knowledge of the student information system required within (2) months of hire.
  • Operating Knowledge of and experience with informational technology including email, power point, and other software.
  • Commitment to innovation and creativity.
  • Ability and willingness to follow directions given and to perform the assigned duties in accordance with application guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Strong work ethic that provides for completing tasks in a timely manner.
  • Adheres to all local, state, and federal rules, regulations, guidelines, policies, and laws in performance of duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
