The Special Education Teacher role was established to coordinate and provide developmentally appropriate educational services for students with diverse abilities. They adapt programming to address the cognitive, physical, social‑emotional, behavioral, and communication needs of students with identified disabilities and maintain required documentation in accordance with federal and state regulations.
Essential Functions- Assume responsibility for the day‑to‑day operation of the classroom, including possible general education settings.
- Provide direct instruction within the classroom, small group, and/or one‑to‑one setting.
- Develop and maintain student IEPs in the Educational Management System and conduct parent meetings to articulate student progress toward IEP goals.
- Cooperatively design and implement IEPs focused on skill deficits, celebrating achievements and successes of students.
- Plan curriculum and prepare lessons and other materials, considering individual needs, abilities, learning levels, and physical limitations.
- Employ special education strategies or techniques to improve sensory, perceptual‑motor, language, cognition, or memory development.
- Employ and follow de‑escalation and isolation/restraint strategies.
- Utilize special teaching tools, techniques, and equipment.
- Utilize active teaching strategies incorporating cooperative learning, audio‑visual/technological advances, and other leading‑edge techniques.
- Use formative/summative assessment data and progress monitoring data to drive instruction.
- Foster cooperative social behavior through activities and group projects to assist students in forming satisfying relationships with peers and adults.
- Collaborate with school staff to guide appropriate accommodations, modifications, and assessment of curriculum and instruction for students.
- Model instruction using effective strategies and methodologies for students with academic, behavioral, and social challenges.
- Maintain effective, developmentally appropriate student management techniques in all settings.
- Discuss students' areas of need and progress with students, parents, and administration, suggesting corrective action as needed.
- Accurately maintain and prepare reports and data required by Federal and State law (IDEA) and the Board of Education.
