A 3rd grade math teacher in Tennessee public schools is responsible for building foundational mathematics skills in early elementary students, strictly aligning instruction with the Tennessee Academic Standards for Mathematics. The role focuses heavily on developing student understanding of multiplication, division, fractions, and multi‑digit arithmetic.
Core Responsibilities- Instructional Delivery: Teach daily math lessons focusing on the four 3rd‑grade critical areas: multiplication/division, fractions, rectangular arrays/area, and two‑dimensional shapes.
- Standards Alignment: Plan curriculum using district‑approved materials that map directly to Tennessee state math standards and focus clusters.
- Math Fluency: Implement daily routines that build mental math strategies, fluency in basic multiplication facts, and problem‑solving skills.
- Data‑Driven Intervention: Administer benchmarks, analyze student performance data, and provide targeted Tier 2 or Tier 3 interventions during Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTI²) blocks.
- Classroom Management: Maintain a structured, encouraging environment that builds math confidence and manages early elementary behavior effectively.
- Special Education Support: Execute required accommodations and modifications for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 plans.
- Parent Communication: Keep parents updated on progress, especially regarding state testing readiness and foundational skill deficits.
- Professional
Collaboration:
Participate regularly in grade‑level Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to analyze student work and plan pacing.
- Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Licensure: Valid State of Tennessee Teaching License with an elementary education endorsement.
- Endorsements: Acceptable codes include Practitioner or Professional Elementary Education (K‑5), Early Childhood Education (PreK‑3), or special education equivalents.
- Testing: Passing scores on required Tennessee Praxis exams (such as Elementary

- Manipulative Integration: Experience using concrete objects (like fraction strips and base‑ten blocks) to bridge the gap between concrete and abstract math concepts.
- Tech Integration: Ability to utilize math software, tablets, and interactive whiteboards to gamify and differentiate math practice.
- Small‑Group Instruction: Strong skills in running a math workshop model with concurrent independent stations.
