Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: JCHS English Teacher (High School) Start Date January 4, 2027

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with proper Tennessee endorsement/licensure in English Language Arts or applicable secondary certification. Must demonstrate "Highly Qualified" status through Praxis testing and/or approved coursework in accordance with Tennessee Department of Education requirements.

REPORTS TO: Principal and/or Secondary Supervisor

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Teachers: 10 months (200 days) with benefits

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Participate in curriculum development, review, and alignment to Tennessee academic standards.
  • Deliver engaging and effective English Language Arts instruction utilizing a variety of instructional strategies designed to promote literacy, critical thinking, and effective communication skills.
  • Foster student growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, language development, and analysis of literary and informational texts.
  • Encourage creativity, collaboration, and independent thinking through meaningful learning experiences, research opportunities, and classroom discussions.
  • Prepare students for postsecondary success through rigorous instruction that supports college and career readiness standards, ACT preparation, advanced coursework expectations, and effective communication skills.
  • Diagnose and evaluate student abilities, performance, and progress in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Monitor student achievement data and adjust instructional practices to meet individual student needs.
  • Create and maintain a classroom environment that is safe, organized, respectful, and conducive to learning.
  • Assess student learning on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required by district and school procedures.
  • Integrate technology and district-approved instructional resources into classroom instruction when appropriate.
  • Refer students for alternative services and interventions as provided by the district, including RTI, ESL, counseling, and related support services.
  • Effectively implement district and school initiatives.
  • Effectively collaborate with department members, administrators, and support staff to promote student success.
  • Maintain appropriate classroom management and uphold school expectations for student behavior.
  • Foster and maintain a fair, positive, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student engagement, mutual respect, and academic growth.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, and administrators.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

OTHER

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Abide by all state statutes, State Board of Education rules, and Johnson County Board of Education policies and procedures.
  • Attend meetings, professional development activities, and school functions as assigned by administrators.
  • Maintain regular and dependable attendance and adhere to established work schedules and assigned duties.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and confidential records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Serve on committees and participate in school improvement efforts as assigned.
  • Remain current on instructional practices, curriculum standards, literacy strategies, assessment practices, and developments in English Language Arts education.

Salary: $50,500 Per Year
