Senior Substation Apparatus Technician

The Senior Substation Apparatus Technician is an advanced-level technical leadership position responsible for overseeing and performing the testing, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of substation apparatus with minimal supervision. This role independently executes complex field electrical testing activities to ensure the safe and reliable operation of high-voltage substation equipment. The Senior Substation Apparatus Technician is expected to recommend and implement measures to improve field service operations, technical quality, and customer service.

This position may be assigned work individually, lead field crews, or serve as the primary technical lead on large or complex electrical substation and powerplant projects. The Senior Substation Apparatus Technician reports directly to the Apparatus Operations Manager and works closely with Apparatus Supervisors, engineers, project managers, and other team members to ensure industry-standard testing practices, safety procedures, and documentation requirements are consistently followed while performing hands-on work in substations and power facilities.

This position is suited for individuals who demonstrate advanced technical expertise and leadership in substation apparatus testing and electrical power systems. Effective communication with the Apparatus Operations Manager and Apparatus Supervisor is required throughout active projects and when awaiting assignment and/or during standby time. Often requires extensive travel and non-standard schedules at field locations with exposure to varying environmental conditions.

What You'll Do:

  • Perform and lead advanced testing, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and commissioning of substation apparatus, including but not limited to: power transformers, circuit breakers (oil, SF₆, and vacuum), instrument transformers (CTs and PTs), disconnect switches and grounding switches, bus work and associated substation equipment.
  • Lead commissioning activities for new or upgraded substation equipment and ensure compliance with project specifications and industry standards.
  • Perform and oversee advanced electrical testing independently, including but not limited to: insulation resistance (Megger) testing, power factor / dissipation factor testing, transformer turns ratio (TTR) testing, contact resistance testing, timing and travel analysis, functional, mechanical, and control system operational checks.
  • Analyze complex test results, diagnose equipment issues, and develop corrective action.
  • Lead the setup, operation, verification, and teardown of test equipment in accordance with company and manufacturer procedures.
  • Prepare, review, and approve detailed field reports and documentation for accuracy and completeness in accordance with company and customer requirements.
  • Follow and enforce all company safety policies, utility safety rules, and applicable OSHA requirements.
  • Lead job briefings, tailboard meetings, and hazard assessments.
  • Use required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times and promote a strong safety culture in the field.
  • Maintain test equipment, tools, and vehicles in a clean and serviceable condition.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 technicians.
  • Coordinate field activities with engineers, project managers, clients, and utility personnel.
  • Travel to job sites as required, including overnight travel and extended assignments.
  • Work outdoors in substations under varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor when interacting with clients, contractors, and utility personnel.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally (written and/or verbal) regarding safety matters (i.e., tailboard meetings), security or environmental incidents, safety violations, or near misses.
  • Coordinate personal lodging, travel, and transportation arrangements as needed.
  • Complete time entry, expense reports, and field service job documentation using company-approved administrative tools or software.
