Copperweld is seeking a driven and detail-oriented Quality Engineer to support our bimetallic wire and cable manufacturing operations. In this role, you will partner cross-functionally with Production, Engineering, Procurement, and Quality to ensure product compliance, improve process capability, and drive continuous improvement.
This position is responsible for ensuring product quality while improving manufacturing processes across wire and cable production, including drawing, annealing, plating (CCA), stranding, and extrusion of insulated wire. This role combines quality and process engineering to reduce variation, eliminate defects, and optimize performance in a continuous manufacturing environment. The Quality Engineer must be able to identify process failures, and implement corrective actions across manufacturing processes such as cladding, drawing, annealing, extrusion, and secondary processing.
WHAT we need you to do.
Drive Process Quality
- Lead quality improvements across:
- Rod breakdown and wire drawing
- Annealing
- Plating (e.g., CCA)
- Bunching/stranding
- Extrusion (PVC, PE, XLPE)
- Investigate and resolve:
- Wire breakage and brittleness
- Surface defects (striations, scratches, die lines)
- Diameter variation and out-of-round
- Conductivity and adhesion issues
- Extrusion defects (voids, gels, burns, poor concentricity)
- Lead RCA (8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone) and implement sustainable fixes
- Resolve production quality issues and ensure spec compliance
- Execute incoming inspections and support supplier quality/validation
- Analyze inspection data to identify trends and drive improvements
- Apply SPC and track process capability
- Correlate process variables to defects
- Train teams on inspection methods and standards
- Audit quality checks for adherence
- Lead customer complaint investigations and CARs
- Support NPI with control plans and compliance
- Maintain QMS (docs, audits, corrective actions)
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline (Engineering preferred) or equivalent industry experience.
- 3-5 years of experience in a quality role within a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with data analysis and reporting tools (Excel, Minitab, Power BI, Tableau, or SQL-based systems.)
- Strong knowledge of quality methodologies including SPC, process capability (Cp/Cpk), and root cause analysis.
- Experience working in a hands-on manufacturing environment; wire, cable, or metals experience preferred.
- Ability to develop, document, and train processes effectively.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work across multiple levels of the organization.
- High level of ownership, self-motivation, and drive for continuous improvement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
