Position Overview

Solid Power is seeking aMultiphysics Modeling Scientist to  joinourtalented team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development ofnext-generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced,collaborative,and innovative team environment. The preferred candidate will have significant experience working withand usingmultiphysicssimulations to modelchemical systems, heat transferdynamics, andelectrochemicaldevice behaviors.

The candidate willbe expected toguidesynthetic approaches for dry, inorganic powders by modeling conditions in high-throughput powder reactors.

They will also work to updateexistingthermal abuse modelsthatintegrate atomic-scalereactionkineticswith continuum-scale heat transferdynamics.

Thecandidateshould be comfortable buildingP2D/P4

DDFNmodels andusing theseapproachestoguide experimentalplanning, especially as it relates to battery formulationimprovements.

Job Duties
  • Develop continuum-scale reactor models for dry inorganic powder synthesis, coupling heat transfer, gas flow, mass transport, and reaction kinetics to guide reactor conditions and experimental planning.
  • Upgrade existing COMSOL-based implementations for thermal abusemodelingof ASSB cells.
  • Develop and validatemathematical models (both fundamental physics-based and data driven) to predict thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical behavior of ASSB materials, sub-assemblies, and finished cells.
  • Work with subject matter experts to develop experimental plans to isolate and quantify key model parameters, while producingminimal solversthat can be used by scientists/engineers.
  • Collaborate with subject matter expertsto refine andcontinuallyvalidatemodeling approaches, while employing best-practice workflows (i.e., meshsensitivity analysis, ablation testing, unit testing, parameter sensitivity quantification).
  • Clearly explain to internal stakeholdersthe uncertainty in modeling predictions and write documentation on proposed upgrades that could be used to improve certainty.
  • Collaborate with data scientists on strategies to acceleratemultiphysicsmodelingsolversandonstrategies toguide virtual experiment prioritization(e.g.Bayesian approaches).
  • Collaborate with atomic-scale and coarse-grained modeling teammembersto translate their outputs into continuum-scale model inputs, assumptions, parameters, and validation targets.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • Master’s or Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry,Materials Engineering,Chemical Engineeringora related

    Electrochemical discipline.
  • 2+ years of professional experience using commercial software to developmultiphysicsmodels of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Adeepunderstanding of electrochemistry, preferably withat least some experience in battery systems.
  • Proficiency with Pythonand common data science libraries such as Pandas, Num Py,andSciPy.
  • Strong analytical and statistical problem-solving skills, havingspecificexperiencewith configuringsolvers forregressionand parametrizationtasks.
  • Experience working withCOMSOL is necessary.

    Experience working in Ansys,workwith

PyBaMM, and general python knowledge are alla strong plus.
  • Previousexperiencebuilding1D PDE/ODE models fromfirst principles and manually implementingthem is a strong plus (e.g.,Numpyimplementation for Gummeliteration, Newton iteration, segregated solver).
  • The ability to formulate coupledmultiphysicsmodels from first principles, including governing equations, assumptions, constitutive relationships, source terms, and boundary/initial conditions, prior to software implementationisa must.
  • Familiarity with agentic code development concepts and the limitations of LLMsis a plus
  • The candidate should be someone whostays up to dateon thelatest continuum-scale modeling approaches.
  • Rapid learner andaself-motivatedindividualwhotakes ownershipin a collaborative start-up environment.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods of time in front of a computer.
  • Some physical data retrieval (i.e. from non-networked computers located within the Solid Power buildings).
