Mechanical Piping Designer

The Mechanical Piping Designer is responsible for developing detailed plans, designs, specifications, and drawings for pipe support systems and standardized support components using computer-aided design software. Working from calculations and written instructions provided by engineers and customers, this role transforms technical requirements into accurate, manufacturable designs that support efficient production and high-quality products.

Responsibilities

  • Create, review, and revise product and pipe support plans, specifications, and detailed drawings based on engineering calculations and customer requirements.
  • Design components for new and existing products and applications, ensuring they meet functional, structural, and manufacturing needs.
  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of drawings and bills of materials generated by CAD and design tools to minimize or eliminate rework in manufacturing.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to deliver precise, high-quality design work and support project objectives.
  • Participate in meetings and work closely with estimating, manufacturing, operations, production, and customer personnel to ensure high-quality design of new or redesigned products.
  • Develop design concepts that are technically sound and aligned with budgetary and project constraints.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry practices and apply relevant industry codes and standards to assigned designs and specifications.
  • Use Support Modeler, Micro Station, PDMS, 2D and 3D environments, and AutoCAD to create and manage design models and drawings.
  • Ensure that electronic files of design documentation and other engineering data are securely maintained and properly organized.
  • Verify that drawings and documents comply with engineering standards before releasing them to manufacturing.
  • Perform other related tasks and duties as assigned to support design and engineering activities.

Essential Skills

  • 3–5+ years of experience in a CAD and 3D modeling environment, preferably focused on pipe supports.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided drafting techniques, with strong skills in structural drafting.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D modeling software in piping and pipe support design.
  • Ability to work effectively in both 2D and 3D CAD environments.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD for detailed design and drafting.
  • Ability to use Support Modeler, Micro Station, and PDMS for piping and support modeling.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy of drawings and bills of materials.
  • Ability to interpret engineering calculations, written instructions, and specifications.
  • Capability to apply relevant industry codes and standards to design work.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills for collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and customer-facing teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Certifications or diplomas in AutoCAD or related computer-aided design disciplines.
  • Experience in piping design and pipe support systems.
  • Familiarity with standardized support components and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to manage and maintain organized electronic design documentation.
  • Comfort working in a cross-functional environment with estimating, production, and operations teams.

Work Environment

This role operates in a professional engineering and manufacturing environment that relies heavily on computer-aided design tools and 2D/3D modeling software. The Mechanical Piping Designer works closely with engineering, estimating, manufacturing, operations, and production teams, participating in meetings and collaborative design reviews. The position primarily involves office-based work at a workstation equipped with CAD software such as AutoCAD, Support Modeler, Micro Station, and PDMS, with secure systems for storing and managing electronic design files.
