Position Description
Department:
Laboratory;
Reports to:
Laboratory Manager. This position will perform hematologic, chemical, microscopic, morphologic, immunologic, and microbiologic testing in a prompt and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies. Responsibilities include helping to set up new methodologies, develop procedural protocols, and train lab personnel. Participation in project improvement activities and support of JCAHO and C.A.P. accreditation standards is required. The technician may assist other departments on a “PRN” basis and is accountable for quality of care delivered in their area.
HIPAA and confidentiality compliance – The technician must understand that patient information is confidential and is not to be disclosed without written authorization. All patient data must be discussed only in authorized areas, and any disclosure outside the facility while off duty is prohibited. HIPAA training is mandatory and non‑compliance may result in sanctions.
Position Requirements- Licensure:
Licensed by the State of Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory Technician. - Education:
Associate’s degree in Biological Sciences or Medical Technology plus successful completion of the licensure examination to meet State, CLIA, and HCFA requirements. - Experience:
Practical experience in fulfilling clinical requirements required for the registry examination. - Special qualifications:
Good communication skills, detail-oriented, computer skills helpful; ability to work independently or as part of a team to ensure quality patient care.
The technician works in hospital rooms, clinical departments, and hospital grounds. Potential hazards include:
- Toxic/caustic chemicals
- Blood or body fluids
- Extreme temperatures (hot or cold)
- Communicable diseases
- Moving mechanical equipment
- Potential electric shock
- Moderate level of noise
- High‑pitched noises
- Weight lifting up to 50 lbs
- Needles or other sharp objects
Requires corrected hearing and vision within functional ranges, manual dexterity to operate equipment and computers, frequent walking, standing, sitting, and reaching. Occasionally may require olfactory or colour discrimination.
Personal Protective EquipmentUse of gloves, masks, and safety glasses, among other PPE, is required during various tasks and activities.
