Position SummaryFunctions under routine supervision to perform specimen collection, handling and processing tasks; receive and respond to client inquiries and requests; reviews requisitions for appropriate test orders, diagnosis codes, date and signature of physician, and legibility; scans requisitions into the medical record; perform chain of custody collections; monitors medical necessity and insurance verification. Follows HIPAA guidelines for patient privacy and protection.
Responsibilities- Receives client inquiries - Answers the phone within 3 rings and initiates timely follow up to client requests.
- Collects specimens demonstrating approved techniques including: minimizing discomfort for the patient, collecting the appropriate specimen on the first stick, and using correct specimen preservation and processing techniques.
- Reviews the requisition for key components including accuracy, legibility, insurance information, and diagnosis codes with minimal denials.
- Performs loading of primary bar-coded specimens on analyzers, and/or primary inoculation of microbiology specimens and waived testing as applicable
- Performs chain of custody specimen collections accurately without fatal flaws. Faxes drug screen results in a timely manner using HIPAA guidelines
- Faxes/Prints reports in a timely manner following HIPAA guidelines.
- Documents and resolves (if applicable) specimen integrity/collection issues, patient and physician complaints, adverse reactions to phlebotomy, and any problems regarding patient specimen and/or phlebotomy demonstrating appropriate problem solving skills
- Monitors collection logs and pending logs frequently, ensuring timely collection of all timed and STAT specimens.
- Maintains a positive attitude toward lab personnel, other departments, physicians, patients, and clients
- Assist in training phlebotomy technique, sample collection and preservation, and LIS accessioning to other phlebotomists. Reports all problems to Supervisor.
- 1 Year Laboratory Experience in a Hospital or similar setting (Required)
- High School Diploma or equivalent (Preferred)
- Driver's License Tennessee (Preferred)
