The Payroll Manager owns the day-to-day processing of payroll for Greenrise’s multi-state workforce and administers the company’s benefits programs. This is an individual-contributor role with no direct reports and does not include certified payroll reporting. This person will ensure payroll is accurate, timely, and compliant; serve as the primary administrator for the company’s benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, HSA/FSA, and 401(k));

and build strong working relationships with employees, managers, and outside vendors.

Duties & Functions
1. Payroll Processing
  • Oversee all aspects of payroll processing, including weekly payroll runs, garnishments, deductions, and incentive payouts.
  • Ensure payroll accuracy and timeliness, adhering to strict deadlines and maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • Handle the administration of electronic timekeeping systems; review recorded time for accuracy.
  • Conduct payroll audits and investigations to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Assist in overseeing the timely preparation, processing, maintenance, and distribution of payroll information, payroll reports, and tax year-end reports.
  • Respond to payroll inquiries from employees and managers in a timely, professional manner.
2. Benefits Administration
  • Serve as the primary administrator of company benefits, including medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA, and 401(k) plans; reconcile monthly benefit invoices and deductions for accuracy.
  • Administer day-to-day benefits transactions, including new hire enrollments, qualifying life event changes, and terminations (COBRA notifications).
  • Serve as the point of contact for employee benefits questions, working with the insurance broker and carriers to resolve claims, billing, and eligibility issues.
3. Systems & Process Improvement
  • Act as the system expert for payroll, managing day-to-day system administration, compliance for existing states as well as the addition of new states, maintenance, and ad hoc setup for internal payroll codes/updates.
  • Partner closely with the Paycor account representative to optimize the usage of the system.
  • Implement new processes and technologies to streamline payroll processing, improve efficiency, and reduce manual tasks.
  • Assist with the integration of the payroll function during an acquisition.
4. Compliance
  • Apply knowledge of IRS regulations, as well as state taxes, wage-and-hour laws, and local tax requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Interface directly with leaders and employees, ensuring clear communication of payroll requirements and serving as a primary point of contact for Payroll.
  • Serve as backup support for the Regional HR Business Partners, providing coverage on employee relations and HR support matters as needed.
Qualifications & Standards
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, accounting, human resources, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in multi-state payroll.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll laws and regulations.
  • Proficient in payroll software and systems, preferably Paycor.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve payroll issues promptly and effectively.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with employees and managers in a tactful, respectful, and compassionate manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative, adaptability, and a collaborative approach.
