Maintenance Apprentice

Mueller Water Products, the nation’s leading manufacturer of flow control devices for the water and gas distribution industries, is seeking a Maintenance Apprentice in our Kimball, TN facility as part of the Chattanooga State Industrial Maintenance Program.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Complete and pass required educational coursework (2 years) and the Department of Labor’s On‑Job Learning (OJL) requirements (3 years).
  • Perform work alongside seasoned maintenance personnel while learning on‑the‑job.
  • Develop skills comparable to those of maintenance technicians and apply them independently as the apprenticeship progresses.
  • Read blueprints, engineering plans, material documents, and specifications.
  • Assist technicians in routine upkeep and advanced preventive maintenance of machinery such as CNC machining centers, conveyor systems, and welding equipment.
  • Learn and comply with OSHA and plant safety rules, including lock‑out/tag‑out, machine guarding, and other relevant procedures.
  • Maintain operational documentation, including production and quality logs.
  • Signal issues or irregularities to machinists, team leads, or supervisors.
  • Keep the work area and departments clean and organized.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines, procedures, and regulations, and use the “Stop, Call, Wait” procedure to flag any equipment or safety issues.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.
Required Skills
  • Strong personal commitment to safety standards in industrial and/or manufacturing environments.
  • Dedication to learning and developing new skills on and off the job.
  • Ability to read, follow, and understand work orders, instructions, processes, and procedures related to equipment.
  • Basic math skills with an understanding of measurement concepts.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to safely use power tools, air tools, and other vibratory tools.
  • Ability to obtain PIV, aerial, overhead crane/hoist licenses.
  • Follow and explain detailed verbal and written area instructions, processes, and procedures.
Required

Education and Experience
  • High‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • Completed Ramsay Multi Craft Aptitude test for consideration.
Physical Requirements
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, steel‑toed shoes, and ear protection.
  • Use hands to manipulate objects with fingers.
  • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and reaching within arm’s length.
  • Stoop, kneel, and crouch regularly.
  • Occasionally reach overhead or lower than shoulder level.
  • Ascend or descend ladders or steps in confined spaces.
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects weighing 25 to 50 pounds in all directions.
  • Remain stationary or standing for prolonged periods and alternate positions as necessary.
  • Perform fine or gross manipulations requiring wrist or hand use.
  • Perform close visual inspections of products, meeting specific vision requirements.
  • Work in open warehouse environments and outdoors, subject to weather conditions (hot or cold).
  • Climb and operate on catwalks, ladders, and other equipment to troubleshoot maintenance problems.
  • Work at heights over 20 feet and in pits accessible only by ladder.
  • Operate standing and sit‑down power industrial trucks (PIT) and other advanced equipment.
  • Use properly fitted PAPRs or respirators when required.
  • Fit, crawl, and maneuver into small or awkward spaces as needed.
