LPN Position Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for providing nursing care, administering medications, and documenting care in the patient's medical record for a designated group of patients under the direction of the RN.
- Under the general supervision of the Department Director, responsible for providing nursing care on assigned shift utilizing the nursing process and age-specific needs.
- Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.
- Administers medications, including IV therapy, to patients according to hospital policy; administers treatments, prepares for tests and surgery, and assists physicians with procedures and examinations.
- Ensures the proper segregation and safe disposal of hazardous pharmaceutical waste.
- Monitors and discontinues blood and blood products.
* May not initiate * - Receives and transcribes physicians’ orders as appropriate.
- Contributes to the development, implementation, and continued evaluation of the patient care plan.
- Documents care in the patient’s record.
- Responds to medical emergencies, initiates CPR or appropriate action, and notifies appropriate personnel.
- Attend facility new hire orientation as scheduled by HR.
- Complete Department Orientation Initial Competency within 7 days of hire date.
- Complete Department Initial Skills Competency within 90 days of hire date.
- Follow facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures.
- Respect cultural and religious practices of patients from all backgrounds.
- Follow HIPAA regulations at all times.
- Be punctual and dependable for assigned shifts.
- Dress within the dress code requirements of the facility.
- Identify all patients using at least two identifiers verbally (name and DOB) and by checking .
- Follow Hospital Wide and Department Specific policies and procedures.
- Interact with physicians, guests, staff, and patients pleasantly, cooperatively, and effectively.
- Pass drug screens, both pre-employment and throughout duration of employment.
Education, Work Experience, Licensure, Certifications.
- Completion of a vocational school LPN program and current licensure as an LPN as approved by the Tennessee Board of Nursing for practice in Tennessee.
- Responsible for Continuing Education Units annually.
- BLS and ACLS certifications must be obtained and kept current.
- Special certifications may be required at the department’s discretion.
- Proficiency in pharmacology and documentation and the ability to demonstrate nursing skills according to current hospital and nursing policies and procedures as normally acquired through the successful completion of documentation class and skills exams.
- Must have a minimum of 6 months experience as an LPN and must have attended a formal IV push medication training program prior to administering IV push medications.
