Psychiatric / Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
The Psychiatric / Mental Health Nurse Practitioner functions as an independent licensed practitioner, evaluating and treating patients referred by primary care providers and community-based licensed counselors. The PMHNP collaborates with behavioral health and primary care team members to provide ready access to mental health treatment for community members, reducing barriers to care and stigma.
This collaboration offers tiers of service, commensurate with patient needs, ranging from informal, peer-to-peer, consultation to comprehensive treatment, including pharmacotherapy, case management, and counseling. Integration of these services into primary care sites offers the patient easy access to care in a familiar setting.
This co-location also promotes informal consultation and skill building through close collaboration of members of different disciplines and specialties. The PMHNP works closely with a supervising psychiatrist, consistent with requirements of licensing entities and payors, to establish a high standard of care, with individualized assessment and planning for each patient.
Often, this work will result in a plan of care that can be initiated and sustained by primary care, with peripheral psychiatric support and backup. Should problems in treatment emerge, the consultant is at hand to assist.
