About the RoleThe Infection Control Practitioner is responsible for identification, investigation, reporting, prevention, and control of healthcare‑associated infections (HAIs) among patients and personnel. She/He may institute collection of cultures and initiate isolation precautions by authority of the Infection Control Committee. The role also involves assisting with in‑service programs related to infection prevention and control.
Essential Functions- Comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control processes in the healthcare setting.
- Knowledge of risk‑stratified statistics applicable to trending HAIs.
- Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing the spread of HAIs among patients of all ages and healthcare personnel.
- Reviews cultures and sensitivities reported by microbiology laboratory to determine if infection is HAI.
- Confers with staff nurses on all patient care units regularly to determine occurrence of HAIs.
- Investigates infections clusters or above thresholds by patient care units.
- Assists with in‑service education related to infection prevention and control housewide.
- Assists in development, implementation and improvement of infection control practices.
- Reviews and/or revises all department policies and procedures related to infection control consistently.
- Communicates infection control activities to administration, Performance Improvement Committee, medical staff and MEC via committee minutes and/or Chairperson reports.

- Education:
Associate’s degree required; BSN preferred. - Required skills:
critical thinking, decisive judgment, ability to work with minimal supervision, work well in a stressful environment and take appropriate action. - Certifications:
Basic Life Support (BLS) required within one month of hire/transfer date. - Licenses:
Must be a licensed Registered Nurse with the State of Tennessee or a licensed RN from a Compact State with proper Tennessee paperwork filed within 30 days of hire. Professional certification within 2 years of hire/transfer date.
