Property Description:
The Course at Sewanee is a highly acclaimed, historic public golf facility owned by the University of the South. Located atop the scenic Cumberland Plateau in Sewanee, Tennessee, the property seamlessly blends rugged mountain terrain with elite golf architecture.
Property & Design Overview- The Layout: It is a historic 9-hole layout originally built in 1915. In 2013, renowned golf architect Gil Hanse (designer of the 2016 Olympic Golf Course) completely reimagined the green complexes, bunkers, and alternate tees while leaving the original mule-and-football-team-plowed routing intact. A comprehensive bunker renovation project further enhanced the course.
- The 18-Hole Dynamic: While it consists of 9 physical holes, it features distinct alternate tees and changing yardages/pars for the back nine. This design allows golfers to play two varied loops of nine for a complete 18-hole experience (e.g., Hole #1 plays as a par-4, but returns as Hole #10 playing as a par-5).
- Terrain & Scenery: Sitting at an elevation of roughly 2,500 feet, the course features prominent undulations, dramatic sidehill lies, deep bunkers, and stunning infinity greens that look out over drop-offs and mountain vistas. [6, 7]
- Hole #5 (“The Edge”):
The course’s signature hole, featuring a dramatic reshaped tee and striking views of the plateau’s delicate ecosystem. - Infinity Greens:
Multiple holes (such as the par-3 3rd) play directly toward cliff edges, providing jaw-dropping panoramic views of the valley below. - On-Site Accommodations:
The course is complemented by The Sewanee Inn, a 43-room upscale boutique hotel located directly on the grounds, alongside a dedicated golf lodge for events. - Dining:
Visitors can dine at Green’s View Grill, a fast-casual restaurant located adjacent to the course that overlooks the Appalachian landscape
The property is widely considered one of the premium public and collegiate courses in the United States:
- Ranked #2 Public-Access Golf Course in Tennessee (Golfweek).
- Ranked #9 best nine-hole course in the U.S. and #18 in the world ().
- Ranked #10 Greatest College Golf Course in America (Golf Digest).
