Field/Service Technician, Installation Technician
Job Summary
Responsible for broadband installation and troubleshooting activities for voice, video and data services. Completes field assessments, meets/exceeds company standards/metrics and completes necessary certifications and education for current role and for consideration for advancement. Functions in an entry‑level position with increasing proficiency and decreasing supervision. Continued employment is contingent upon achieving required training, certifications and safety requirements. Works on straightforward tasks using established procedures.
CoreResponsibilities
- Performs installations and changes of service while adhering to company procedures, safety practices, NEC and NESC requirements, and local ordinances.
- Completes all customer interactions and service calls.
- Troubleshoots the drop from the tap to the customer's equipment.
- Assesses and designs basic home networks using coaxial cable, Ethernet, Wi‑Fi networks and MoCA based on customer needs.
- Maintains timely record keeping for entry in the customer's account.
- Determines acceptability of service by reviewing and confirming quality of service based on test results; adjusts or fixes service to provide the best possible outcome.
- Determines appropriate placement of Wi‑Fi devices and network design, considering channels and interference.
- Provides advanced customer education to set expectations about products, services, and company policies.
- Cleans, maintains and stocks vehicle and equipment for duty readiness.
- Reports vehicle repair or service needs and any accidents, injuries or property damage to supervisor and customer when appropriate.
- Reconciles with warehouse regarding issued CPE.
- Operates and maintains installation tools, technology and equipment, including hand tools, light power tools, meters, ladders, etc.
- Demonstrates navigation of digital tools such as work order management and digital diagnostics.
- Obtains and maintains appropriate licenses or background checks as required.
- Shows sound judgment, problem‑solving and project management skills, accepting ownership of personal decisions.
- Performs work from high places, including climbing poles, ladders and bucket trucks, wearing proper safety equipment.
- Manipulates tools and lifts loads up to 70 lbs; works in confined spaces, around power lines, and in moderate noise environments.
- Drives company vehicle safely during scheduled work days and maintains a valid driver’s license.
- Communicates effectively with customers and coworkers.
- Works in various weather conditions and may include weekends, nights, overtime, 10‑hour days, or mandatory overtime.
- Meets or exceeds established goals and performance metrics and maintains regular, punctual attendance.
- Completes required training and passes certification tests within specified time frames.
- May be assigned additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Adaptability, Communication, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Customer‑Focused attitude, Professional Etiquette, Resilience, Self‑Motivation, Technical Knowledge.
- Physical ability to lift 70 lbs, work in confined spaces, handle temperature extremes, and climb high places.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicle.
Base Pay: $18.20 per hour. Most non‑sales positions are eligible for a bonus.
