Purpose of the Position
The primary function of the Educational Interpreter is to facilitate communication among deaf and hard of hearing students and their hearing peers, teachers, and other personnel involved in a student’s education through interpretation and transliteration. Other educationally related duties may be performed as appropriate when the interpreter is not required to do interpreting.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Associate or Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Must meet ISBE certification requirements.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Ability to interpret and transliterate (expressive and sign-to-voice) at a normal conversation rate. Conceptually Accurate Signed English and American Sign Language Skills required.

- Climbing: ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding ramps, poles, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
- Balancing: maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
- Stooping: bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.

- Pulling: using upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
- Lifting: raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position.
- Finger use: picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working primarily with the fingers.
- Grasping: applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palm.
- Talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, conveying detailed instructions accurately, loudly or quickly.
- Hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds, receiving detailed information through oral communication, making fine discriminations for adjustments.
- Repetitive Motions: substantial movements of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
- Light Work:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Machine Operations: inspection, close assembly, clerical, administration. Minimum standard for data and figure analysis, accounting, transcription, computer, extensive reading or visual inspection.
- The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. Activity occurs inside and outside.
