CDL DUMP TRUCK OPERATOR – PAVING & AGGREGATE

Department: Operations / Transportation

Reports To: Transportation or Operations Supervisor

Employment Type: Full-Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The CDL Dump Truck Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating company dump trucks to transport asphalt, aggregate, stone, sand, gravel, millings, and other construction materials between company facilities, job sites, quarries, asphalt plants, and customer locations. The operator is expected to maintain safe driving practices, follow DOT requirements, perform routine vehicle inspections, and support paving and aggregate operations as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely operate CDL dump trucks to transport asphalt, aggregate, stone, gravel, sand, millings, and related materials.
  • Load and unload materials at asphalt plants, aggregate facilities, construction sites, and customer locations.
  • Position trucks properly for loading and unloading operations.
  • Operate truck controls, including dump beds, hydraulic systems, tarping systems, and other related equipment.
  • Perform required pre-trip and post-trip inspections in accordance with DOT regulations and company policy.
  • Identify and report mechanical, safety, or maintenance issues immediately.
  • Maintain accurate daily logs, delivery tickets, load tickets, inspection reports, and other required documentation.
  • Secure loads properly and ensure truck is not overloaded.
  • Follow all applicable DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and Tennessee transportation requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
  • Use appropriate PPE when entering plants, quarries, paving sites, and other work areas.
  • Communicate professionally with dispatchers, supervisors, plant personnel, paving crews, customers, and other drivers.
  • Assist paving crews with proper truck positioning and material delivery when required.
  • Safely back trucks using mirrors, cameras, spotters, and established company procedures.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly truck and cab.
  • Complete routine maintenance tasks such as checking fluids, tires, lights, brakes, and other basic components.
  • Report accidents, incidents, near misses, property damage, and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and courteous attitude when representing the company.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Safety Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Comply with DOT and FMCSA regulations.
  • Wear required PPE.
  • Follow proper backing procedures.
  • Never operate equipment while impaired or otherwise unable to safely perform the job.
  • Participate in required safety meetings, training, and drug/alcohol testing programs.
Qualifications Required
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), appropriate for the vehicle being operated.
  • 2+ years Dump Truck Experience
  • Ability to meet applicable DOT physical and medical qualification requirements.
  • Ability to pass required DOT drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to safely operate a dump truck in construction, paving, and aggregate environments.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience working around asphalt plants, quarries, paving crews, or heavy construction equipment.
  • Basic understanding of truck maintenance and hydraulics.
Physical Requirements
  • Sit and operate a commercial vehicle for extended periods.
  • Enter and exit a dump truck repeatedly throughout the workday.
  • Climb steps and ladders.
  • Walk on uneven, rocky, muddy, or paved surfaces.
  • Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb as required.
  • Perform vehicle inspections and secure loads.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Work around heavy equipment, moving vehicles, asphalt plants, aggregate facilities, and construction activities.
  • Extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

Work Schedule

Work schedules may vary based on paving, plant, quarry, and customer requirements. Early morning starts, extended hours, overtime, weekends, and occasional holiday work may be required during peak construction periods.
