Role Overview:

A Community Employment Consultant 2 level (CEC
02), locally referred to as an Employment Services Consultant (ESC) often blends structure with flexibility throughout the day, since the role focuses heavily on customer service, case support, and frontline program operations. Here's what a typical day might feel like:

Morning

  • Log in to a laptop and check messages, system alerts, and any pending cases that need quick attention.
  • Review the day's schedule: calls, walk-ins, reports, or tasks assigned by the director or supervisor.
  • Begin handling customer interactions-phone calls, emails, or in-person visits - answering questions, explaining program requirements, and helping individuals navigate processes in a clear and supportive way.

Throughout the day

  • Manage and monitor the provision of Wagner Peyser Employment Services throughout the Work One office, ensuring compliance and adequate office coverage.
  • Set daily, weekly, and monthly schedules to provide Work One office coverage, coordinating with regional leadership to ensure coverage for all services and programs offered through the Work One office ensuring all services are consistently and adequately supported by DWD staff daily.
  • Submit to fill vacancies, screen applications for the most qualified candidates, schedule and conduct interviews, provide ESAM with recommendations and move forward with established procedures to make appropriate hiring recommendations and decisions. Average staffing is 8-12 with low turnover; usually 2-3/year.
  • Provide customer service while looking for opportunities where you take the initiative by stepping up and helping where needed throughout the office.
  • Coordinate with teammates or leadership to clarify guidelines, get approvals, or escalate cases that need additional attention.
  • Participate in team meetings or quick check-ins to address workload balancing, policy updates, or process improvements.
  • Monitor monthly staff performance to identify any concerns or deficiencies, and provide any coaching or training needed for staff to be successful in their role.
  • Complete follow-up work-sending notices, documenting interactions, or preparing items for review.
  • Wrap up lingering tasks from earlier in the day, ensuring nothing time-sensitive is left hanging.

End of Day

  • Double check that all cases touched are properly documented.
  • Log out knowing you played a meaningful role in keeping the program running smoothly and serving the public with clarity and care.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Reach out to employers with qualified Work One candidates to fill employer openings.
  • Work with regional employers to fill open positions and pre-screen candidates as necessary.
  • Collaborate with regional business services representatives in preparing and promoting the hiring of talent including specialized populations, Veterans, vocational rehabilitation, adult education, youth, ex-offenders, etc.
  • Gather information from applicant, evaluate qualifications, educational backgrounds, and employment barriers.
