The Vigo County Commissioners have proposed the construction of a new Jail/Security Center to replace the current facilities. It has been determined the current facilities no longer meet the needs of the community due to the size and the inability to meet the needs of our community. The proposed facility was originally estimated to cost approximately $68 million and with some modifications, it is currently estimated at $60 million.
The bond payment on the construction of a new jail is estimated at $5 million per year for a 20 year period. The annual operating costs for a new facility has not been projected at this time but there is an anticipation of increased costs. In order to fund the annual debt service and operating costs an increase to the Local Income Tax has been proposed.
