Position: Sheriff: Security Sergeant (INTERNAL ONLY)

Sheriff:
Building Security Sergeant

Performs intermediate responsibilities by serving as security for Vigo County Sheriff Department; enforcing laws of the state and protecting individuals who work at or visit the Vigo County Courthouse, Annex & Juvenile Center; and performs related work as apparent or assigned.

Examples of Duties:

  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws by implementing effective policy to protect the lives and property of the people. Monitors security cameras and performs perimeter security checks of the Courthouse, Annex & Juvenile Center, ensuring the safety of all employees and visitors. Scans articles through X-ray machine, monitors metal detectors, and searches individuals who set alarm off.
  • Apprehends and arrests persons who violate state, federal, or county laws, advising individuals of their constitutional rights, searching suspects/arrestees, and seizing weapons and/or contraband.
  • Collects, preserves, and maintains chain of custody of evidence. Escorts inmates from Court back to the Jail.
  • Gathers/disperses information to individuals on a need-to-know basis. Assists the public when entering and visiting the Courthouse. Responds to emergency calls for help and/or panic button alarms, and evacuates Courthouse in cases of bomb threats or other emergencies. Maintains confidentiality and security of information.
  • Provides assistance in Court as needed, taking individuals into custody at Judge's request and serving warrants as needed. Assists officers from other departments who come to the Courthouse, Annex or Juvenile Center for paperwork, hearings, and/or trials. Prepares and submits to superiors all required reports and summaries of activities according to established Department deadlines. Provides testimony in legal proceedings/court as necessary.
  • Attends seminars and in-service training as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • 3 Years of Service CBS OR 2 years in CBS and 2 years of service in other area of law enforcement
  • No written disciplinary action in the last 365 days
  • No suspensions in the last 2 years
  • Ability to occasionally work extended, irregular, and/or evening hours and occasionally serve on 24-hour call for emergencies.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Supplemental Information:
Incumbent performs duties according to established Departmental policies and procedures, with work priorities and schedules primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public. Assignments are guided by definite objectives using a variety of methods or procedures with incumbent referring to supervisor for unusual or unprecedented matters. Incumbent receives indirect or occasional supervision and has a moderate degree of flexibility in the job.

Periodically, decisions are made in the absence of specific policies and/or guidance from supervisor. Errors in decision or work are primarily detected or prevented through prior instructions from supervisor and procedural safeguards. Undetected errors could result in damage to equipment and/or have adverse effects upon Department operations or members of the public. Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, Courts, other law enforcement agencies, and members of the public for purposes of giving/receiving information and maintaining cooperative work relationships.

Incumbent performs duties in a county buildings involving sitting/walking at will, standing/walking for extended periods, lifting/carrying equipment weighing under 25 pounds, climbing stairs, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, keyboarding, handling/grasping/fingering objects, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent may occasionally be required to run fast for short and/or long periods, run up/down stairs, and subdue an attacking and/or armed individual.

Incumbent maintains considerable contact with the public and is regularly exposed to irate/hostile individuals. Protective gear and/or equipment, such as bulletproof vest, must be worn according to Department policy. Incumbent occasionally works extended or irregular hours and/or evenings, occasionally serves on-call, and responds to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. Incumbent is appointed by the Chief of Operations.
