Role Overview:
The Highway Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisor plays a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of our diverse fleet. Our heavy equipment (snow-fighting vehicles, dump trucks, lift trucks, paving equipment, excavating equipment, tractors), light vehicles (roadside trucks), and essential equipment (weed eaters, chainsaws, and other motorized equipment) are the backbone of our daily operations. Our Highway Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisors directly minimize downtime, reduce outsourcing costs, and boost overall efficiency while planning and working within budget restraints.
This dynamic role involves scheduling and executing routine maintenance, diagnosing urgent repairs, and implementing preventive diagnostics to extend asset lifespan and guarantee compliance with all safety and environmental regulations. Additionally, the Highway Heavy Equipment Mechanic Supervisors leads a team of mechanics on a limited basis and coordinates daily work assignments to all shop personnel and reports problems to management as needed.

This position is with INDOT’s Terre Haute Sub-District.
Pay Rate:
This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.
Mechanic Positions:
Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.
INDOT also provides a generous Standard Hand Tool Reimbursement of up to $1500 per year for full-time Mechanic positions for the purchase, replacement and repair of tools required for maintenance and repair activities related to INDOT’s fleet of transportation vehicles, snow and ice management equipment, road maintenance equipment and all other fleet items.
A Day in the Life:The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Diagnoses electronic engine control systems (e.g., engine control modules, anti-lock brake systems, medium and heavy-duty automatic transmission engine control modules) using scan tools, laptop computers, and available software.
- Identifies, troubleshoots, and repairs or replaces engine electronic sensors.
- Troubleshoots, repairs, and calibrates central hydraulic system control units used in highway salt applications.
- Test drives a variety of motorized equipment (e.g., dump trucks, backhoes, tandem axle dump trucks, front-end loaders, and combination of vehicles with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001lbs. or more, where GVWR of the vehicles being towed is in excess of 10,000 lbs, etc.).
