Rehabilitation Teacher II – Texas Health and Human Services Commission. Employment at Terrell State Hospital (1200 E BRIN). Full‑time day shift, not eligible for telework. Salary range $4,094.50 - $5,094.16 per month.

• Assist in performing mid‑level rehabilitative planning and instructional work for patients with mental health challenges in a forensic and/or psychiatric setting.
• Develop and lead psychoeducation, psychosocial programs, and special events tailored to each client’s strengths, interests, and rehabilitative needs.
• Teach self‑help and self‑care skills to promote independent living, working both individually and in groups.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, using Person‑Centered Recovery Plan meetings and hand‑off communication to modify and enhance treatment plans.
• Prepare supplies, equipment, and materials for scheduled activities; submit purchase requests for replenishment.
• Complete documentation in computer‑based medical records per JC, CMS, facility, and department guidelines.
• Attend required programmatic in‑service trainings and maintain compliance with program standards.
• Demonstrate and model safety practices; comply with SDS procedures, proper storage, and use of non‑toxic, ligature‑free supplies.
• Maintain an orderly, safe treatment environment and actively mitigate unsafe situations.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including supporting disaster response, continuity of operations (COOP) activations, and alternate shift patterns if required.

• Knowledge of rehabilitative processes and adaptive strategies for patients with diverse cognitive, physical, and social challenges.
• Knowledge of group dynamics and effective teaching methods in psycho educational and psychosocial settings.
• Proficiency with computer‑based medical records, including retrieval, printing, and documentation of interventions and outcomes.
• Observational ability to identify significant patient behaviors and accurately document them in progress notes.
• Strong communication skills with supervisors, co‑workers, and patients, following established policies and procedures.
• Ability to maintain inventory of supplies needed for activities and services.
• Capacity to teach a wide variety of leisure, social, independent‑living skills, and to educate patients on the value of recreation and engagement.
• Demonstration of reliability, motivation, and a relaxed atmosphere that encourages cooperation among patients and staff.
• Ability to validate, create, and consistently display genuineness, enthusiasm, and relational skills when interacting with patients.

• Preferred:
  Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with major in casework, rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, social work, education, or a related field and a minimum of six months experience in a related field.
• OR:
  Associate degree with a minimum of twelve months experience in rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, social work, education, or a related field.
• OR:
  No degree with a minimum of three years experience in rehabilitation, psychology, sociology, social work, education, or a related field.
• AND:
  At least one year of experience in social and rehabilitative services work or in teaching and counseling persons with mental health challenges or varied disabilities.

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks, including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, and List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males aged 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility; specific positions such as the Waco Center for Youth require applicants to be at least 21 years of age.

Flexibility in work hours may be required; the position may necessitate overtime, extended hours, or alternate shift patterns.

Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required. Employees must be vaccinated as required by their level of contact with individuals.
