Position: State Hospital IT Deskside Support (Terrell)

Job Summary

Network Specialist IV – State Hospital IT Deskside Support (Terrell). Provides technical and network support for the State Hospital, leads a team of IT staff, and ensures network reliability, design, and maintenance.

Compensation and Working Conditions

Salary: $5,098.66 – $8,304.83 per month. Shift: Day. Travel: up to 30%.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as front‑line technical support for local and remote personnel, resolving PC workstation hardware, software, and connectivity issues within Service Level Agreement (SLA) standards.
  • Install, monitor, and maintain LAN and WAN equipment, including cable, hubs, switches, and limited router support; collaborate with the Data Center Services vendor to ensure service levels.
  • Lead the assigned IT Operations team: conduct interviews, assign tasks, monitor performance, manage leave schedules, and participate in performance evaluations.
  • Maintain agency workstation hardware and software, ensuring patch levels, connectivity, and security software are current.
  • Provide limited instruction and user support on network, data, telecommunications hardware, application software, and utilities.
  • Conduct product evaluations for new or upgraded software, recommend enhancements, and consult on purchasing decisions.
  • Assist with public health emergencies, disaster response, and Continuity of Operations activation as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of network facilities, data processing techniques, personal computer hardware, software, network operating systems, security software, and performance monitoring tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to troubleshoot and repair IT hardware and software and translate technical terms into non‑technical language.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and resolve network problems, train others, and oversee the work of subordinates.
  • Teamwork orientation, recognizing technical limitations and seeking assistance when needed.
  • Physical ability to move computer/telecommunications equipment and work beyond regular 8‑5 shift if required.
  • Compliance with HHSC Guiding Principles, Code of Ethics, and Universal Expectation for Personal Responsibility.
Qualifications
  • At least two years of experience in network troubleshooting and in an IT troubleshooting position.
  • Experience supporting desktops within a network environment, including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Experience supporting local and wide‑area networks and associated equipment such as servers and network switches.
  • Experience leading a team or project.
  • Experience using Active Directory tools and structure.
  • Experience working in a trouble‑ticket resolution environment and using a system similar to Helix.
Certifications & Licensure
  • Completion of CompTIA A+ training within the first year of employment is required.
  • Certifications in CompTIA Network+, Security+, Microsoft, or Cisco or related educational paths may substitute for work experience.
  • Relevant coursework in Information Technology, Computer Networking, Network Systems, Computer Science, Information Security, or related fields considered as alternative experience.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check and a pre‑employment drug screen.
  • Males aged 18‑25 must register with the Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old;
    Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required; overtime and extended hours possible.
  • Travel to other work locations may be required.
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy is required; vaccination per contact level and mask usage for unvaccinated influenza protection.
