Job Description

HSCS is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals, one youth residential treatment facility, and thirteen state supported living centers.

The psychiatric hospitals are a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. Responsibilities
  • Performs moderately complex (journey-level) grounds and building maintenance work at a State Hospital, including mowing, trimming, fertilizing, and planting/removing trees and shrubs.
  • Performs general maintenance, repairs, and construction work for the hospital.
  • Maintains groundskeeping tools, supplies, and equipment; cares for grounds and gardens.
  • Performs relief duties which may include weekend, after-hour callout, and shift work as needed.
  • Participates in disaster response and/or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.
  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be scheduled for specific, rotating, extended, or overtime shifts as allowed by policy.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

(KSAs)
  • Knowledge of planting and care of trees, shrubbery, flowers, and grass
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools and equipment used in groundskeeping and maintenance
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply guidelines, regulations, and policies
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and to stand or walk for extended periods
  • Ability to work in hot and/or cold conditions
  • Ability to work harmoniously with co-workers and patients
  • Ability to operate various tools and equipment related to groundskeeping
Registrations, Licensure or Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire; out-of-state licenses require a certified driving record per HHSC policy.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Three (3) months of experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, florist helper, groundskeeper, or similar work involving vegetation maintenance.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Males 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old;
    Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.
  • Flexibility in work hours; overtime/extended hours may be required.
  • Immunization policy compliance; vaccinated status may be required; if not immunized, may need to wear a mask and take other measures.
