The Risk Management Specialist IV, Director of Risk Management performs highly complex (senior-level) work developing, coordinating, implementing and evaluating a multi-faceted risk management program at a State Hospital (SH). The role includes developing, implementing, and reviewing facility policies, programs, guidelines, and procedures in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations and Joint Commission standards related to risk management, safety, emergency preparedness, and workers’ compensation.
Responsibilities include conducting environmental and safety inspections, communicating results, making recommendations for risk mitigation, coordinating corrective actions, overseeing daily routine security surveillance, supervising staff, implementing effective risk‑management and safety educational programs, and managing emergency and disaster preparedness activities.
- Attend work regularly and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, overtime, or extended shifts in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Develop, implement, and review facility policies, programs, guidelines, and procedures in compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, or Joint Commission standards related to risk management, safety, emergency preparedness, and workers’ compensation.
- Coordinate activities to ensure compliance with Life Safety Codes, Fire Marshall inspections, and the State Office of Risk Management.
- Develop and maintain an organized system for facility reporting and compliance with law, agency policies and procedures, and external standards pertaining to the provision of services in a State Hospital.
- Conduct environmental and safety inspections of facility operations, review audits, and communicate with facility administration and division/department heads regarding Life Safety Code/State Fire Marshall violations.
- Coordinate continuous improvement activities and establish improvement programs, goals, and objectives, evaluating progress toward mitigating and minimizing risk.
- Coordinate workers’ compensation and return‑to‑work programs.
- Direct and coordinate daily routine security surveillance of the facility, including camera monitoring, facility entrance and egress points, and accident reporting.
- Identify security breaches and environmental hazards, taking immediate action to mitigate identified risks.
- Supervise staff assigned to the department, including hiring, training, performance evaluation, and development of a competent workforce.
- Coordinate plans of correction/improvement to improve security and reduce risk; maintain supporting documentation for evidence book and monitor plan implementation.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive Risk Management/Safety educational program and Emergency/Disaster Preparedness training, presenting trainings to new and tenured employees.
- Direct, coordinate, and conduct various emergency drills/exercises, review reports, assess effectiveness, communicate results, and correct deficiencies within established time frames.
- Serve as chairperson of the employee Accident Review Board and member of select committees such as Safety Committee, Incident Management Review Team, QA/QI Council, and Emergency Management Team.
- During emergencies or disasters, maintain an active physical presence, coordinate with incident commanders, provide expertise, and generate after‑action reports with recommendations.
