Job Summary
Under general direction of the Fleet Services Manager, performs highly skilled technical work in the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of a diverse fleet of City-owned and leased vehicles and equipment. The position is responsible for maintaining and repairing light-duty vehicles, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, specialized equipment, and other fleet assets utilized by various City departments, including public safety operations.
The Fleet Services Technician applies advanced mechanical knowledge, diagnostic techniques, and repair skills to ensure fleet vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable, operational, and available to support City services. Work requires experience in gasoline and diesel engines, computerized vehicle systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment repair.

Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of
- Advanced principles, methods, and practices of automotive, truck, and heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
- Gasoline and diesel engines, fuel systems, emissions systems, transmissions, braking systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical/electronic systems.
- Computerized diagnostic equipment, repair software, and fleet management systems.
- Preventative maintenance practices and methods for maximizing fleet reliability and service life.
- Safety procedures related to vehicle repair, shop operations, hazardous materials, and equipment operation.
- Federal, state, and local regulations related to vehicle inspections, environmental compliance, hazardous waste disposal, and recycling practices.
- Diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computerized vehicle problems.
- Performing skilled repairs using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, hoists, gauges, and specialized repair equipment.
- Reading and interpreting technical manuals, repair schematics, wiring diagrams, and service documentation.
- Maintaining accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Communicating effectively with supervisors, department personnel, vendors, and service providers.
