Job Overview

The Vehicle Driver I position performs routine motor vehicle operations, transporting food carts to units promptly and in a sanitary manner.

The driver also assumes food service duties when short staffed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain a Class C commercial vehicle or a small truck with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or below, including towing a trailer.
  • Transport food, dishes, and supplies to units or designated areas in accordance with the food service manual.
  • Clean vehicles, trailers, dock areas and perform scheduled maintenance checks.
  • Record fueling in the Fuel Log and complete weekly/monthly maintenance check lists.
  • Adhere to rotation policy for milk and juice delivery.
  • Perform duties of a Food Service Worker when short staffed or assigned.
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.
  • Work a regular shift schedule with occasional overtime or extended hours per agency policy.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Safe motor vehicle operations, passenger and cargo loading/unloading methods, and traffic rules and regulations.
  • Preventative maintenance of motor vehicles and ability to perform basic checks before, during, and after operations.
  • Skilled maneuvering of trucks in tight areas, operating motor vehicles, and working on a schedule.
  • Excellent communication, cooperation, and positive interpersonal interaction.
  • Physical endurance, ability to work in challenging environments, and tolerance of cold or hot weather conditions.
  • Competence in performing duties of a food service worker and following loading/unloading procedures.
Licensure, Registration & Certifications
  • Minimum Texas Class C driver’s license in good standing;
    Class B preferred.
  • Food Handlers Certification required or to be obtained within the first 6 months.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Six months of work experience.
  • One year of experience operating motor vehicles on a commercial basis.
Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screening, and registry checks, including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). Males 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age;
Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age. Flexibility in work hours may be required, including overtime and extended hours. Compliance with the HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required; vaccination against Hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza is mandatory unless a medical exemption applies. Non‑vaccinated employees for influenza may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
