Job Description

The district offers a $2,000 stipend to teachers who select a target school for the first year of teaching at that school. A target school is a school that has over 90% economically disadvantaged students and/or English Language Learners exceeding 30% of the student population.

Target content areas include Special Education, Math (grades 6–12), Physics, Chemistry, and ESL (all grade levels). Subject to change based on critical shortage areas.

To receive the stipend, the teacher must hold a Louisiana Level 1+ Teaching Certificate or Out of State Certification in the content area.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate
  • Certification in area of assignment
  • Eligible for a Practitioner’s License as confirmed by a local university (if required)

  • 183 days
Salary Range
  • Commensurate with degree and certified teaching experience (to be verified)
Scope of Responsibilities
  • Promote the mental, physical, emotional, and social growth of students.
Performance Responsibilities / Essential Functions
  • Uses available instructional materials and a variety of techniques to provide opportunities for student achievement and development.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and application of appropriate developmental practices.
  • Keeps accurate, neat records including class lists, attendance, health records, roll book, report cards, and permanent folders.
  • Maintains an attractive classroom and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Develops and implements proper classroom management techniques.
  • Completes reports, assignments, and records in a timely fashion.
  • Collects lunch and/or activity monies as necessary.
  • Plans and prepares for classes, submitting lesson plans weekly.
  • Reports regularly and punctually to assigned work locations.
  • Notifies principal or designated person of impending absence.
  • Supplies substitutes with adequate plans and materials.
  • Maintains books and equipment assigned to the class.
  • Becomes knowledgeable about methods, programs, curriculum guides, procedure bulletins, and available resources.
  • Uses a variety of methods for diagnosis and placement purposes.
  • Exhibits self‑control and decorum for student emulation.
  • Provides for individual differences.
  • Evaluates student progress and plans with student needs in mind.
  • Cooperates with school‑based and central office personnel.
  • Encourages parents to be informed of student progress and needs.
  • Participates in professional growth, in‑service training, faculty meetings and studies.
  • Conforms to Louisiana laws concerning health, safety and welfare of students.
  • Assists in development and implementation of quality education in JPS.
  • Participates in evaluation process.
  • Performs all other duties assigned by principal.
Work Environment / Hours Worked
  • Teacher works in a school setting, climate controlled environment, and outside areas subject to climate extremes.
  • Work day consists of teacher hours at assigned school site per bargaining unit agreement.
Communication Skills
  • Effectively communicates in English orally and in writing.
  • Ability to give and receive information via tele‑communication system and communicate pleasantly with students, parents, and personnel.
Equipment Used
  • Telephone, audio‑visual equipment, classroom computer, copy machine, laminator, calculator, and other appropriate machines.
Physical Involvement
  • Standing, walking, reaching, bending and lifting up to 10 pounds as sometimes required.
  • Operate classroom equipment.
  • Physically transfer, restrain, or position special education students as required.
Mental Involvement
  • Plan and implement appropriate education programs for all students.
  • Understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
  • Keep accurate and up‑to‑date written and verbal instructions.
  • Comply with state and parish regulations.
  • Utilize effective classroom management techniques.
Human Relations Involvement
  • Work cooperatively with students, parents, and personnel.
  • Respond positively to supervision and accept suggestions for improvement.
