Principal System Safety Engineer

Job Overview

Principal System Safety Engineer position located onsite in Tewksbury, MA. Requires U.S. citizenship and an active Secret security clearance. The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

• Develop and implement MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs.
• Understand safety budget and tasking through coordination with CAM/IPTL/product owner.
• Mentor junior safety engineers.
• Actively engage in engineering review boards to assess design changes and impacts to the safety program.
• Establish an ongoing feedback loop with functional and program management.
• Lead and coordinate System Safety Working Groups between key Raytheon and customer representatives.
• Interpret system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to recommend compliance strategies.
• Collaborate across integrated teams to identify and mitigate risks.
• Analyze engineering hardware, mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics for fault tolerance, latent hazards and safety compliance.
• Collaborate with Program Management and government approval authorities across design, fabrication, integration, test, production to demilitarization and disposal phases.
• Manage safety‑related interactions with suppliers and subcontractors.
• Understand and shape system safety across the lifecycle.

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience.
• Experience with DoD System Safety Programs such as MIL-STD-882.
• Experience briefing at Military Safety Review Boards, Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards and System Safety Working Groups.
• Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and proposal development.
• Preferred: 6 years of experience with a Master’s degree in STEM.

Salary range: 107,500 USD – 204,500 USD.
