Overview

The Motor Equipment Metal Mechanic (Motor Vehicle Body Repairer) repairs damaged bodies and body parts of automotive vehicles, such as automobiles, buses, and light trucks, according to repair manuals, using hand tools and power tools. The work includes removing upholstery, accessories, electrical and hydraulic window and seat-operating equipment, and trim to gain access to vehicle bodies, beating dented areas, filling depressions, removing damaged fenders, panels, and grills, and replacing parts.

Repaired surfaces are refinished, headlights are aimed, wheels are aligned, and hydraulic brake systems are bled. The employee may paint surfaces after performing body repairs.

Responsibilities
  • Performs journeyman welding in maintenance and repair shops on parts and bodies for mobile industrial equipment.
  • Plans, lays out, fabricates, assembles, installs and repairs metal body parts necessary to recondition and modify mobile and non-mobile equipment.
  • Modifies body parts and installs items required by Maintenance Work Order Requests (MWORs), such as cabs, cowls, aprons, doors, bodies, hoods, various metal containers and frames.
  • Provides coordination, on-the-job assistance, and/or limited technical direction to employees performing similar work.
  • Plans and schedules work from authorized work orders and performs quality assurance and quality control functions in process and upon completion.
  • Performs routine and non-routine troubleshooting and problem identification and resolution.
  • Responds to emergencies and provides assistance based on skills, knowledge, and ability.
  • Performs all other position-related duties as assigned or requested.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands

Typical shop environment with no unusual hazards. Frequent lifting to 20-50 pounds, kneeling, standing, and walking. Routine sitting and constant use of speech/hearing for communication. Requires planning and organizing skills and the ability to work under deadlines.

    Enforces a safety culture; completes training requirements and participates in emergency response tasks and safety committees.

    Maintains quality management and customer satisfaction responsibilities.
  • Procedure Compliance:
    Reads, understands, and implements general and specific operational, safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED and specific training with broad knowledge of related disciplines (e.g., general math).
  • Minimum five (5) years of documented, verifiable work experience in the metal mechanic field.
  • Pre-employment test of structural welding abilities based on customer requirements, prints, and materials used.
  • Good written and spoken communication, analytical skills, and working knowledge of basic computer systems and software.
  • Valid and current state driver’s license.
  • Ability to understand and use Technical Manuals and complete paperwork related to vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to manipulate and use hand tools and hydraulic equipment; ability to work in a team environment;
    English literacy (read, write, understand).
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and a government background check.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization (US Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location).
  • Ability to pass a National Agency Check (NAC) within 60 days of hire if required.
  • Availability to work any shift, including weekends and other hours as needed.
Location and Compliance

Work on this contract is performed at the Red River Army Depot. Access requires registration with the United States Selective Service.

Compensation

$29.13 per hour. The compensation range is a good-faith estimate and may vary based on job responsibilities, education, experience, skills, internal equity, market data, applicable agreements, and laws.
