Overview

TxDOT's Atlanta District is looking for a Roadway (Transportation) Maintenance Crew Chief in our Texarkana Maintenance Section. As a crew chief, you will coordinate equipment, materials, and personnel for roadway maintenance projects and work closely with the maintenance section supervisor. Experience gained in this position can provide opportunities for advancement within the department.

Minimum Salary: $54,278.00 | Maximum Salary: $87,046.00

Responsibilities
  • Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities.
  • Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Answers emergency notifications on an as‑needed basis and contacts private entities as required.
  • Schedules daily work assignments, serves as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting, presents operational updates to the supervisor, provides input on team members’ career conversations, and approves leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Oversees contract workers and coordinates applicable activities.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Assists during accidents and emergency weather situations to sand bridges and roads, put‑up warning signs, and organize the response of crews.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Monitors material testing and inventory of roadway maintenance materials.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments.
  • Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Education

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience

5 years experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full‑time or prorated part‑time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year‑per‑year basis.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and must have or obtain, within 90 days of employment, an “N” endorsement.
Preferred Qualifications Licenses and Certifications

Class “A” Commercial driver’s license (CDL) with “N” endorsement.

Knowledge of
  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance work.
  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Incident management procedures.
Skill in
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
