Position Information
Position Title: Assistant Professor of Nursing
FLSA: Exempt;
Contract Length: 12 months
Position Type: Faculty;
Employment Status: Full Time;
Position Funding: Regular
Responsible for providing instruction in the Associate Degree in Nursing program, Vocational Nursing program, and other courses in the COM Nursing Department. Develop and revise curriculum and coursework. Provide scheduled office hours, serve on college committees, and participate in student orientation, advisement, and other assigned activities.
QualificationsRequired:
- Master’s of Science Degree in Nursing.
- Current Texas RN license or eligibility for license.
- Consistent active work experience within the past three (3) years in the nursing field.
Preferred:
- Doctoral Degree in Nursing.
- One (1) year of teaching experience in a community college setting.
- Proficient in teaching principles and practices, training techniques, and knowledge of material for the specific course and program area.
- Knowledge of student engagement techniques and strong communication, interpersonal skills.
- Strong documentation and record‑keeping skills.
- Clear, concise, professional communication (written and verbal).
- Effective prioritization, time management, and proactive communication of progress, challenges, and solutions.
- Dependable, punctual, and accountable with empathy toward students, colleagues, and patients.
- Adaptability to diverse learners, including non‑traditional students.
- High motivation and team collaboration.
- Evidence‑based knowledge in current nursing practice.
- Ability to integrate real‑world experience into teaching.
- Comply with COM and Nursing Department policies and procedures.
- Prepare teaching and learning activities that promote clinical judgement.
- Develop and revise curriculum and coursework; prepare online learning platforms.
- Meet clinical assignments and coordinate schedules for assigned agencies.
- Supervise students caring for 1–3 patients and coordinate safe nursing care.
- Maintain Texas RN licensure and required credentials, immunizations, and CPR certification.
- Provide a minimum of 7.5 scheduled office hours per week for student availability.
- Participate in committees and meetings, attending 90% of the time.
- Model ethical, compassionate, and culturally competent care.
- Uphold academic and clinical standards; serve as a role model and mentor for students and new faculty.
- Advocate for student success and academic integrity.
- Participate in program improvement and leadership initiatives.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Director of Nursing.
Unencumbered Registered Nursing license in the state of Texas.
Physical RequirementsWork indoors in classroom, skills lab, and office; travel to clinical assignments. Clinical shifts may last up to 12 hours. Must be able to stoop, bend, lift up to 50 pounds, and assist in patient care. Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and intermittent two‑person patient lifting.
