* Bachelor's degree

* Minimum of two years of experience and leadership certifying and supporting student veterans in secondary or post-secondary education setting.

* Current on annual School Certifying Official (SCO) training requirements.

Preferred Education/Training/Experience

* Veteran status (including Commissioned Officer, Non-Commissioned officer, or retired Commissioned, Non-Commissioned officer).

* Three (3) or more years of progressive experience and leadership certifying and supporting student veterans in secondary or post-secondary education setting.

Minimum Knowledge & Skills

* Demonstrated knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, and statutes related to benefits

* Experience utilizing specialized computer programs and applications to certify benefits

* Proficiency in use of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point

* Complex or technical office practices and procedures, including ability to type, attention to detail with strong sense of urgency and time management

* Self-motivated with strong communication and interpersonal skills

* Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate multiple projects

* Work requires use of initiative and judgment

* Excellent proofreading and grammatical skills

* Compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports

* Organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines

* Maintain regular, prompt and reliable attendance

* Strong communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Job Duties

* Hire, train, and supervise the Administrative Assistant (full-time), the Academic Advisor (full-time), and the work-study students (part-time).

* Oversee and lead the certification process for military benefits, ensuring accurate and timely submission to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Advise Veterans, student Veterans, their families and dependents of their rights under military service benefits acts and other relevant legislation.

* Serve as lead School Certifying Official (SCO) with the Veterans Administration, the Texas Veterans Commission, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for all veteran educational benefits; maintain compliance with state and federal regulations governing the application of military-connected education benefits.

* Counsel veterans/eligible family members on the various educational programs and assist veterans/eligible dependents with completion of application(s) for veteran educational programs. Respond to veterans/eligible dependents inquiries regarding status of certification.

* Monitor progress of veterans/eligible dependents while enrolled to ensure compliance with regulations and report changes as required.

* Promote external benefit programs available to veterans by hosting seminars/workshops for veteran students; compile, promote and distribute information to veterans regarding external benefit programs.

* Submit the annual Hazlewood Database report to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as required and the annual "Approval to Train Veterans" packet for the Texas Veteran's Commission.

* Set up the Veterans Administration software program-Enrollment Manager-with accurate data for each academic year and maintain information listed on the College's website regarding veterans educational benefits programs and services.

* Coordinates and implements various programs and services to support student veterans by hosting events that promote benefit programs available to veterans.

* Responsible for preparing and submitting all reports and for responding to audits in a timely and accurate manner.

* Responsible for the Annual Catalog submission to VA.

* Serve on college committees as assigned. (Curriculum Committee, Prior Learning Assessment, QEP Steering Committee, etc.)

* Responsible for tracking and reporting the 85/15 requirements and the 35% Exemption Application.

* Serves as the liaison for the veteran/eligible dependent(s) with the College's administration and faculty and with other College departments in clarifying information or clearing discrepancies.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary Work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
