Position Summary

The Fire Faculty member is a full‑time academic instructor responsible for delivering high‑quality instruction in the Fire Technology program, following the National Fire Protection Association Standards and in accordance with Texas Commission on Fire Protection and State Firefighter and Fire Marshall Association requirements. This position plays a vital role in future firefighter education and professional development through classroom and hands‑on skills instruction.

Fire faculty collaborate with staff and adjunct instructors to ensure a comprehensive, student‑centered learning environment emphasizing safety, competency, and professionalism.

Qualifications
  • Associate degree or higher in Fire Technology or related field (bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Current certification as a Structural Firefighter with TCFP.
  • Valid TCFP Instructor II certification.
  • Valid TCFP Field Examiner Certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of recent field experience as a practicing or retired firefighter.
  • Minimum three (3) years’ experience in fire education or teaching preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using technology in education, including LMS platforms and simulation equipment.
  • Texas DSHS Certified EMT‑B or NREMT EMT Basic.
Preferred Education / Training / Experience
  • Seven (7) years as an Instructor in the Fire Protection career field and/or five (5) years working in Fire Protection Training (Fire Department Training Division or a Fire Service Academy).
  • Bachelor’s or higher in Fire Technology or related field, and at least 3 years of administrative experience or office support experience.
  • TCFP or IFSAC Fire Officer IV.
  • Texas DSHS Certified Paramedic or NREMT Paramedic.
  • Experience with teaching or training delivery.
  • Fire Service‑related knowledge and experience.
  • Knowledge of the material being taught in the various courses of instruction offered.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with students, coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, as well as intermediate computer skills.
  • Must be familiar with interactive teaching methods and instruction via the Internet.
  • Principles, best practices, and trends in fire training and management.
  • Supervisory principles, practices, and methods.
  • Certification standards.
  • TCFP and SFFMA accreditation standards and practices.
Preferred Knowledge & Skills
  • Trends in fire science, fire training, and fire academies.
  • Experience in teaching in a fire academy.
  • Experience with teaching a dual‑credit fire academy.
Job Duties
  • Instruct and supervise a diverse population of students in the classroom at various times and locations, including IDLH environments.
  • Commitment to student engagement, student success, and instructional excellence.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Prepare and utilize a course syllabus and assessments for each course using guidelines established by the institution.
  • Maintain current knowledge of effective teaching methodologies and utilize a variety of instructional delivery methods, classroom media, and educational resources.
  • Assess students’ performance through a range of measurement activities and keep them informed of their progress promptly.
  • Utilize technology to facilitate learning and to access data, maintain records, generate reports, and communicate with others.
  • Assist in the development, distribution, and collection of assessments for courses and program objectives.
  • Build positive and professional relationships with students, colleagues, college administration, and the Fire Service community.
  • Exhibit a commitment to lifelong learning through participation in professional development activities.
  • Adhere to the College of the Mainland’s policies and procedures.
